>The House on Tuesday approved a massive tax overhaul that would usher in steep rate cuts for American companies, double the deduction millions of families claim on their annual returns and make a host of other changes as part of the biggest rewrite of the tax code since the Reagan administration.

>The bill passed on a 227-203 vote, with 12 Republicans defecting to join Democrats in opposition. The Senate started debate shortly afterward, with a vote expected overnight.
>The $1.5 trillion package, presuming it clears the Senate, would hand President Trump his first major legislative victory just days before year’s end and the congressional recess.
>“Today, we are giving the people of this country their money back,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., declared Tuesday on the House floor.
>“This is real relief, and people are going to see this in their paychecks before too long,” Ryan said. He added that "this is the greatest example of a promise being made and a promise being kept.”
>Barring any unexpected reversals, the bill is expected to narrowly pass the Senate in a matter of hours.

We're almost there, let's all cross our fingers and lend them our meme energy.

>The tax bill does include one major rollback of the Affordable Care Act, repealing the individual mandate requiring Americans to buy health insurance.

Yes, looks like that is still in there, thank God.

good, as long as it has this and it cuts taxes (no I don't care if it's the rich's taxes, they still have to cut spending) then I'm quite content.

From what I've heard, the people who don't observe a decrease in their taxes are predominantly wealthy people in blue states. They're salty about SALT getting axed.

yeah, all those "poor middle class" people that were taking 6 figure deductions on their taxes can kill themselves. The only real problem there is they'll move out of their horrible cities now and ruin other areas by moving into them, i.e. virginia

Sorry if I should already know this, but does this bill reduce or eliminate the state tax deduction? Other replies imply it, but I want a clear answer

even if they weren't full of shit they're being retarded, the numbers that show that assume the economy won't grow, that we won't cut spending, and besides which it's 1.4 trillion over like a decade or some nonsense when it jumped 10 trillion under obama

I don't entirely understand it, but I guess there was some kind of procedural issue, the house has to revote or something. They said something about having to strike "certain provisions" because they violate some kind of budget rule, they haven't elaborated on it more than that. I'll expect we can read about the details in the morning. However it sounds like the overall effect of the bill won't be affected and it is basically passed.

I looked into it, I guess the issue is with two provisions in the House version of the bill, one of them having to do with using 529 savings accounts for home schooling expenses, and the other was something to do with determining whether endowments for universities were subject to one of the new taxes. Not a huge deal.

I guess these two provisions violated the Senate budget reconciliation rules because they pertain to policy rather than budget, so they had to be stricken from the bill, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to pass it through reconciliation and they would need 60 votes to pass instead of a bare majority. There was an earlier vote on whether to override the rules and include those two provisions anyway but they needed 60 for that one and it failed, so those two provisions are out. Since the House added them they now have to send it back to the House minus those two provisions and they will vote on it tomorrow morning. After that it goes to the President's desk to sign.
