Season three was a flop that introduced alicorn Twilight. Where should the show have gone after season two? If no opinion on that, are there any other points in which the show could have gone one way, but went a way that was mediocre?

It should have had slower character progression whereby Twilight gradually becomes a selfless guide and ruler before ascending to princess, Rainbow Dash learned to work hard before joining the Thunderbolts, and Fluttershy becomes more three-dimensional. Dunno about Applejack and Rarity but the CMC should have learned talents that weren't lazy and stupid, instead picking up talents they didn't expect through hard work and sacrifice.

I didn't have a huge issue with the alicorn thing, I just thought it could have been developed better. I like the way they did the Grand Galloping Gala arc in the first season. They had an episode about it early on, it's mentioned intermittently as the season develops, and then the last episode is them at the Gala. It's a good way to build up to something like that and it still allows them to do a season consisting of mostly self-contained episodes. The third season was just poorly planned and poorly executed, it was just a bunch of one shot stories and then all of a sudden Twilight becomes a princess at the end. If they had at least taken some time to try to build up a storyline about Twilight being tested or having to undergo some sort of trial it wouldn't have been so out of the blue and weird. I have a similar issue with the way all of the ponies achieved their goals, it isn't that I don't think it should have happened, it just feels as if most of their accomplishments were unearned. I also don't like the way they handled the CMC getting their cutie marks. The writers were clearly setting them up early on to each find a particular talent of their own, and then all of a sudden they just decided "nope, we're just going to give them generic stupid marks that don't mean anything and throw in an unnecessary villain redemption while we're at it."

The problem with the show is that it goes the episodic way like Spongebob. Normally there's not an overall plot or direction for the story or characters. It's just "Bad guys comes between seasons and meanwhile we enjoy slice of life and the friendship lessons that comes with it". I know they make it that way because it's simpler for the staff and the young audience and also they never intended to make something deep with the show since the beginning (including Faust), but however, with the possibilities this show has, I think you could've gone places and made something greater with characters arcs like Twilicorn, Rainbow Dash joining Wonderbolts, CMC getting their cutiemarks etc. There is potential wasted in others like Celestia, Zecora and even Applejack, because the show doesn't develop them completely and in a satisfactory way, at least not always since s2. The show could've better happenings, but it does nothing with much of it's potential.

Seasons 1-2 where nice warmups that promised interesting plot lines that could be followed up on. I think season 3 was definitely half baked and needed some more time to be thought through. Season 4 was a nice change from the brain fart that was the previous season but (IMO) was where you can see future show problems take root, problems like character motivations, arcs, developments and etc. are changed or dropped. Season five is where the root problems start to grow deeper with more of the same problems and glimmer’s reform, her reform is like twilight getting wings. Half baked ideas needing more time to develop.
My main problem with the show nowadays is that there’s no love or interest put into it like before, where you learn about Zecora and how despite being strange helps the cast when they mistake poison joke for her magic. Or how the storyline with the buffalo and ponies had both sides not being necessarily in the wrong, neither one being the “good guys” y’know? I also liked having this idea that you can’t reform of befriend everyone, which is partly why I like Chrysalis and dislike the changeling reform(Not to mention the new look is atrocious). Nothing is nuanced or “realistic” as stupid as that sounds and is too damn safe for kids, they need to know that not everyone wants to be friends, they’re not “good or evil” but just creatures and that being friends and trying to make friends is the magic. Or I’m just a faggot complaining about cartoon ponies on a breakoff board.
