They are the same species, and no species is particularly more prevalent in terms of breeding. A child may be the same race as either of its parents, OR of any of its ancestors. Remember the story of Mr. and Mrs. Cake. Both of them had distant relatives who were a pegasus and unicorn, which allowed them to have children who were a pegasus and a unicorn.

There are lesser attributes of all of them and greater attributes for all of them as well, seeing as how they were all evolving and working in different environments throughout the early lore of the universe. It wouldn't be possible through interbreeding to kill off any race either, because as shown by Mr. and Mrs. Cake, Earth ponies (the most likely dominant trait because of assumed biology) can still reproduce to create pegasi and unicorns, provided the proper recessive genes are present.

Ponies are one race made up of three tribes. (Alicorns are an anomaly) Its like how Europe is made up of many tribes but they are all white.
