>>49224You're goddamned right the AR is more American
>>49224I like the feel of how the AK is and the AK has better stopping power. I've only fired one, don't own one. The AR's nice too, but it doesn't feel right in my hands though. Just my subjective opinion though.
The AK-47 would be a really shitty gun, except that it's almost unbreakable and replacement parts are easy to come by. You can't depend on hitting anything at the distance you'd expect to be hitting things with a rifle. Much unlinke the AR-15.

>>49296I think a recap of the essential points is in order, just to remind OP why he's wrong
>>49306A horrible gun for a horrible, lesbian horse.
Ive got experience on M4's but ive shot an AK once so not the best judge but the recoil was just too much for accuracy imo.
The AR-15/M-16 has been and always will be the better rifle, only reason this comparison even comes up is because of shitty grain loads in Vietnam and improper maintenance. Mud, dirt, water, etc pretty much has to be forced inside the weapon into it's deepest crevices before it becomes a problem.
The AK on the other hand can get blocked up pretty easy since most are open bolt, but are just easy to clean out and """fix"""
I heard a saying about the ak vs ar that fits the situation perfectly
Russian quality means easy to fix when it quits.
American means it doesn't quit easy, but when it does you're fucked.

I've fired both and I like both of them but I like AR-15s/M16/M4 rifles more since they fire just right and they are aesthetic as fuck. Also they are American so thats 5 plus points automatically for me.
>>49224Is this a debate over calibers or platform? Because there ar AR platforms that fire more than .223
>>49224I started watching a historical Gun Channel from Hungary a while ago. Most guns from the Soviet union are overrated shit. That includes handguns, bolt rifles and assault rifles.
>>49453Well for example, the 300 Blackout round, which is AR platform-based, was desgned to get similar performance to the 7.62 round. Alternatively, the .458 SOCOM is another round fired from an AR that is designed to have superior knockdown.
In the pic left to right is 5.56, 300BLK, 7.62, 6.5 Grendel, .458 SOCOM, .308. All of these can be fit to the AR platform. AK's can only fire 7.62 and its variants.
>>49224Neither
The Right Arm of the Free World tops both
>inb4 "muh commie killin M16A1" >>49463Yet another reason why the AR15 is the superior firearm
>>49471Get out of here with your non-commie killing Belgian gun
>>49473>non-commie killingYou realise the FN-FAL was created for and used by the entirety of NATO (except burgerland) for use against the Red Menace. That thing spilled more commie blood than the AR-15 ever did
>>49476If the FAL is such a good weapon, why has it been phased and replaced out while the Kalashnikov and AR series are still going strong? But that's besides the point
The FAL is not as good for casual shooting in your backyard (or for the less fortunate, your local gun range) than either the AR or the AK, mostly because of its much bigger round. FAL ammo is more expensive than either the AK or AK. The FAL has fewer rounds in its magazine (20) than the AR or the AK (30). It has a much higher recoil as well.
And the FAL, like the AK, is not American, and is not modifiable like the AR.
>>49471Battle rifle fags are okay in my book because battle rifles are good for killing spooks and full-size cartridges will probably be in use for a while again when people besides the US start fielding troops in powered exoskeletons.
That said it will go the way of the intermediate cartridge again soon after that when we adopt tiny tungsten tipped darts in a SABOT instead.
>>49453You are just saying that because of my superior gun choice
>>49224I didn't even know that this is a serious question.
Yeah, an AR-15 has an higher effective range.... but that's not what they are built for, it's an assault rifle. Also don't forget that the AK-47 is 15 years older than the AR-15.
The AR-15 is just great in theory and on some fact sheet. In reality it will just break because of dirt or sand.
There are >100 million AK-47 out there... but just 8 million AR-15.
>>49248>m-muh AR accuracyThat shitty new/k/fag meme needs to die.
>>49317M-series dust covers barely work in the first place. Tight tolerances = carbon/lead/copper/etc. buildup = problems. As for bullet choice 80gr was the required minimum for effective lethality at 400M, 92gr was found to be optimal for armor defeating, but 100gr dropped off faster than old .30-30 flat nose.
>>49463Did you forget about the AK-74 using 5.45? The #1 reason most Soviet prototypes over the years were discarded was due to them not wanting to produce a new cartridge. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't, only that they had 7.62 (and later 5.45) production lines already set up. Soviets confirmed for lazier than natard shits anyhow.
>>49522Combat rifle. The term "assault rifle" is only attributed to the Sturmgewehr 44 as a meaning of: "rifle meant for assaulting".
I am no expert on the subject, but I can tell you my opinion from being an owner of both guns and having and interest in war history.
I think that both guns are good but serve different purposes depending on what one expects it to do.
The AR has a lighter round, great for recoil (faster followup shots) along with the ability carry more ammo at once at a time than the AK.
The AK's that we are talking about(47, AKM and type 56) use a much larger 7.62 round, allowing significant greater penetration then the AR-15/M16's smaller 5.56 round.
A lot of people compare the effectiveness of each gun by talking about the first major conflict where both were used against one another, Vietnam. but as the annons in this post points out (
>>49317,
>>49522) the AK had been in use for a good amount of time when the M16 was deployed. The American believed that the M16 was "self cleaning", so it was not initially deployed with a cleaning kit. (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M16_rifle#Reliability)The rifle jamming frequently, along with only being issued 20 round magazines compared to the AKs 30 round mags, it was no wonder why US troops picked up and used AKs instead.(
http://www.vietnamwar.net/AK-47.htm)However, with new developments from the 70's onward, the AR-15/M16 platform has become more modular and customization, compered to the AK which was replaced with the AK-74 with its smaller 5.45 round that is more like the AR.
The other thing to keep in mind is that AK ammo is cheaper then AR due to huge amounts of surplus, but it do keep in mind that is is no longer the standard round of countries like Russia and China, so it may start to become more expensive as time goes on. (but due to the fact that almost one filth of all guns in existence is an AK, this may not be the case).
TL;DR Both guns do different things but are good, and a lot of the criticism about the AK and AR/M16 from Vietnam is no longer relevant due to advances in both guns.
(also, the pic is the both of the inventors of both guns meeting each other that I stole from the internet for this post).
>>49224What about the SKS? Same round as the AK-47. I say it handles a bit better to be honest.
>>49581OP here, so do you think picking up an AK-47 would be worth it? With me I am looking at the AK-47 but my bud has been trying to convince me to get the AR. I am looking for a gun that is cheap, dependable, easy to clean and maintain, cheap ammo and fun to own. What one do you thin would be better
>>49596Pic the gun you want, desu.
I'm partial to the AR-15, because 'murica.
>>49597This. The "Murica" part, not the "pick the gun you want" part
>>49596I want to point out that he wasn't joking about the modularity of the AR. If you decide that you want to fuck around with different types of ammo, you can pretty much modify the rifle to shoot practically any round that you want.
I've seen kits for modifying your AR to shoot .22lr, 9mm, 7.62, and even .50 bmg for example. Generally it's a matter of swapping out your upper receiver for a new one and changing your buffer spring. Since only the lower receiver is considered the firearm, you don't have to deal with the paperwork of buying completely different firearms to play around with different ammo.
It's also worth mentioning that the AR is pretty much omni-present in the states. In the event of SHTF, you're more likely to be able to scavenge parts for an AR than for an AK.
But if your heart says AK, then get the AK. The point is for you to enjoy your gun.

A comrade on my left and another on my right
And a clip (magazine) of ammunition for my little Armalite.

He hit me with his rifle and he kicked me in the groin,
I begged and I pleaded, sure me manners were polite
But all the time I'm thinking of me little Armalite.

Six hundred British soldiers he had lined up at his feet
"Come out, ye cowardly Fenians", said he, "come out and fight".
But he cried, "I'm only joking", when he heard the Armalite.

Sure, the army came to visit me, 'twas in the early hours,
With Saladins and Saracens and Ferret armoured cars
They thought they had me cornered, but I gave them all a fright
With the armour piercing bullets of my little Armalite.
And it's down in the New Lodge that's where I long to be,

>>49224AR if you want to actually hit something.
AK if you want to cover a gun in dirt and piss and still be able to fire bullets.
>>53907The AK's resilience is pretty much a meme. In torture tests the AR can handle more mud and crap while still being able to fire.
