I heard the Yellow Vest Rebellion over in France was going to do a Bank Run. What does that mean, and how did it go?

Sorry, I couldn't think of any pony thing related to this. Except maybe Leslie Fair, but that felt too obvious.

It's apparently the International Bank Run 2 :electric Boogaloo. It's this time this Friday when most banks are actually open.

Awesome! By the way, what's a bank run? Are people going to try and torch/destroy the banks, or just protest outside them?

I had an elementary teacher who said there are no dumb questions. Truth is there are, and asking what a bank-run is, in fact, is one of them. If its a question that goes along the lines of what is x, then google it instead of asking since it'll save you time and let everyone dig into the subject matter instead of humoring you for a definition.

The bank run was about people withdrawing their money out of the banks en masse, essentially leaving the banks penniless. The result would likely have been the banks putting restrictions on the amount people could withdraw causing an ever bigger backlash from people. I don't think the Bank run amounted to anything big at least I haven't heard anything that indicates it. But then again the news here have been keeping quiet about the Yellow Vest protests.

Thank you!
Would it be enough for everyone to withdraw their money at the same time, or would they need to borrow money to make up for those who didn't show up and left their money in the banks?

The banks can only lend out money based on how much money they have "in store". I think the ratio (take what I say here with a heavy dose of skepticism as I can't remember how it was and I just read something about it a long, long, time ago) is that for every dollar they have in an account they can lend someone else a thousand dollar. They basically use the money people have in their accounts as collateral or something like that to be able to borrow from central bank that they in turn can lend out to customers.
Also there is just so much money printed so if people withdraw cash at some point the banks would run out of currency to hand out. And if the central bank starts to print money to give to people who wants to withdraw I think it would have ramifications on devaluation of said currency. Only so much money can be in circulation at any time without fucking the economy or some shit like that. Probably a result of not using the gold standard any more, so the central bank can only guarantee the value of a limited number of money in circulation.

But again, remember my memory is fuzzy I am not very familiar with the full inner workings of the banking system. So I can not state anything of the above with certainty, or be sure it is correct. So don't take what I wrote as the truth, unless someone can verify or you can verify through research.

In countries where people panic and start emptying their accounts in fear that government will collapse or similar have been followed by banks stopping letting people take out money simply because the banks have run out of money to hand out. And then the economy have usually taken a turn for the worse.

Why do I need to say this twice? Use a "related" picture when making a thread, or otherwise the thread is indistinguishable from a spam thread from the catalog. I would have deleted this post for this reason if I had caught it earlier

This sounds about right, but I'm not an economist either.

People deposit money in banks, which banks then invest into the market. Banks essentially create money out of thin air when they give out loans, so there is no "technical" limit to how much money that can be lent, but there is a legal limit on the ratio of deposits to loans. By withdrawing one's money, that ratio is changed and banks may end up going over the limit and become bankrupt.
Central banks would get involved at that point, but that's another story.

https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/france/reserve-requirement-ratio
It seems that the Reserve Requirement Ratio is only 1% applied to all accounts. This is compared to the Federal Reserve's (U.S.A.) variable requirement from 0% for small scale accounts to 10% for large accounts.

A coordinated bank run on an unsuspecting bank would work so along as more than 1% of total deposits are withdrawn at the same time. However, if there is enough warning (to cash in investments) or if it borrows from the central bank then it could be more easily absorbed.

I know I shouldn't be, and yet I'm still amazed that you put this much thought into image selection but decided in the end that "ridiculously big-boobed anime girls" was the most relevant image you had. The thread is about a bank run, so maybe you could have picked something to do with money? Filthy Rich maybe? Applejack counting her bits? Random generic background ponies engaged in some sort of transaction? Even if you didn't have anything specifically relevant, literally any random pony image would have worked. You could have just typed "My Little Pony" into a google search and used the first image that came up and it would have worked just fine, or failing that you could have just used a photograph of the Yellow Vest protests. But no, you didn't do that. You just went through all of your saved images, looking for ponies, apparently didn't find one that suited your exact purposes, and then said to yourself "well, I guess if I can't find the perfect pony image, this image of anime girls with gigantic disproportional gazongas is the next best thing."

See this image I posted? I just grabbed it at random from my folder. It has nothing to do with anything in the thread. It's frankly a little disturbing. I have no idea who drew it or why I saved it. And yet, it has ponies in it. It is therefore relevant on some level. More relevant, by leaps and bounds, than "anime girl with humongous titties completely out of proportion to the rest of her misshapen body, with a tiny disproportionate head on top of her shoulders giving the peace sign while another anime girl looks on in embarrassment as she realizes that her titties will never be as large or as disproportionate as the first girl's." And yet, after all that deliberation and soul-searching, that's what you decided to go with.

Why do you do this, Nigel? Why? How does your brain work? I want to understand.

A random pic with ponies is much preferred, due to the nature of the site. You'll get more replies that way.

You could have been original, grabbed some clip art of a bank, and then drew legs on it in paint. That would have been great.

I'll I'm saying is that it takes like 30 seconds to look up and find a related picture. Pic not-unrelated took less than a minute.
