If you put it in this way, then is worth to mention that Ukraine was a Russia's buffer state before the NATO cup of 2014.
Russia have made pretty clear that accession of Ukraine or Georgia (both having border with Russia) to NATO will not be tolerated. Meaning this a full out war.
This issue is not minor because American cruise missiles will have a shorter time to reach Moscow.
