DT was such a low tier ignorable annoying villain for so long and I don't think anyone really expected a change. Although the show does have the habit of redeeming characters. But that song describing why she was like that made it all totally understandable and ….. excusable (wtf!). It was such a dramatic turn.

Snowdrop comes to mind, the many Celestia/Luna epics. The later even more so when you go a whole year, in the beginning, without hearing much about Luna in the show but are wanting them to bring her back already, damnit!!

You're right. Discord was bad, but he was never evil. He likes getting laughs at others expense, but it never had any real malice behind it. That, and the s6 finale showed what equestria would have been like if he won, and he was doing exactly that. Annoying the shit out of Celly and Luna.
