June 22nd, 1941 was the start date for Operation Barbarossa, the code name for the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Barbarossa would go do in history as the largest invasion in military history and would spawn a conflict that consumed millions of lives. It would be the start of Germany's crusade against bolshevikism that would ultimately end in failure. Despite great operational successes, Barbarossa could not force the Soviets to capitulate.

Today in 1945 the Battle of Okinawa ended, 77,000~110,000 Japanese soldiers, ~12,000 American soldiers and 40,000~150,000 civilians died, Japan lost 1 battleship, 1 light cruiser, 5 destroyers, 9 other warships and 1,400 aircraft, America lost 12 destroyers, 15 amphibious ships, 9 other ships and ~760 aircraft. The Allies won Okinawa and the island could have been used in the potential invasion of mainland Japan.

Today in 1966 during the civil rights march "March Against Fear" protesters arrived in Canton, Mississippi where the began to erect tents on the school grounds of McNeal Elementary School and were subsequently GASSED by police, although they only used tear gas.
