~somewhat cont. Sistani-like figure would guarantee to sustain shia influence spread from Lebanon through Syria and Iraq to Iran. Al Sadr tho dreams that Iraq can rival Iran over regional dominance. >inb4 shia Saddam He met with Salman (may Allah inflict every type of cancer upon him!) Good thing is he has no love for America, to whom we all wish death, of course. Let alone remind yourself all the whereabouts of Mahdi's Army that Sadr was leading. The leaflets specifically called on the rebels to lay down their weapons and seek reconciliation with the government.
The government warned the rebels that they are already winning and that taking their arms with them won’t change anything on the battlefield.
In addition to addressing the rebel forces, the leaflets also called on the residents in Daraa to join the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in their war on terror.

Even with 25 members of the security forces and five civilians killed, officials immediately hailed the insurgents’ departure as a victory. They said that hundreds of insurgents had been killed in the one-day assault on Farah city and that the government’s response proved it could beat back any Taliban initiative to take and hold territory. >>147503 you just gotta love how taliban produces half assed videos with rusty ass nokia phones in the age of smartphones with integrated cameras, yet everywhere ISIS pops up they suddenly have 1080p very high HD cameras with a dedicated video montage department and a photgraphy department to take set up pictures to capture the instant in the most cinematographic way really fucking makes you think
>>147506 Taliban videos are getting a bit better, mostly Gopro though. I think a few reasons for the differences are that ISIS is the "cool jihadists" with the younger generation, many of which who have been exposed to more modern technology or even come from western countries where they gained the experience and can do some pretty good video editing. Of course it can be assumed that many ISIS videos now are probably edited in western countries as it is, since their media HQ in Mayadin was destroyed by the SAA last year. Plus the availability to get more modern tech into Afghanistan is probably fairly limited, and the Taliban most likely don't care as much as IS at producing slick videos, as their results speak for themselves. Lastly, I haven't seen any such slick IS videos released by IS-K, normally they just upload pictures. The best IS videos were from Iraq, with Syria being second. The IS Sinai faction produce pretty low quality videos, usually Gopro battle footage, so they probably face many of the limitations that IS-K in Afghanistan have in regards to video equipment.

>>147508 > I think a few reasons for the differences are that ISIS is the "cool jihadists" with the younger generation for sure i'm not denying that ISIS is more aware of their image and how they should pay attention to details the point is, wherever they go there is this high tech recording material (in a place which is isolated from the world and thus bringing so much material in this place would be a lot of redflags for anyone working in customs and they have people that know how to use the material and how to take cinematic pictures where all the militants are local defectors and not western diaspora and i highly doubt that these taliban defectors discovered a hidden artistic side overnight) >it can be assumed that many ISIS videos now are probably edited in western countries editing is one thing, knowing how to use high tech electronic, how to use angles and shading to take pictures implies that there is someone on the spot who knows this much. which makes me very suspicious of the authenticity of all this >Plus the availability to get more modern tech into Afghanistan is probably fairly limited, yet ISIS can get it through customs (such equimpent, not only cameras but sound recorders and camera stabilizers, is heavy and cumbersome so good luck smuggling it in your ass even if you're a veteran of anal jihad), hell they could even get inuits pulling out hd camera out of thin air and know how to use them to record quality videos

>>147520 That would be an unpopular position on 4/sg/, the cult of personality would take over. A few weeks ago under a memeflag I responded to a German who had commented on the "Syrian War Tl;dr" meme by saying there was something left out. I responded to him that in addition to what he said was left out was the fact that Assad allowed ISIS to initially flourish in the hopes that they would go after the rebels, and that he tried to take a play out of Hafez's playbook by allowing jihadists to infiltrate opposition groups, but was unable to play the game like Hafez was capable of. Of course ISIS did fuck up rebels, but as we know the situation grew out of Assad's control. The German responded with Wikileaks shit that everyone has seen and stated that the FSA and ISIS were cooperating, at that point several posters jumped on him (you may have been one of them actually, not sure) asking if he had stopped following the war in 2014, etc. I was actually surprised they didn't jump on me for making the initial statement. It is common knowledge that Assad also released several AQ militants from Sednaya Prison and they quickly linked up with the rebel groups, but 4/sg/ likes to avoid that fact. Assad was trying to use old strategy that worked for Hafez before, so I can't say I blame him 100%, but the times were different than in the 80's. Most likely Assad did these things on the advice of his father's former military leaders who had done this before, they just underestimated the Gulf States and western governments throwing money and weapons at the opposition groups. >>147490 The number of separtist in the Paki Pashtoons (or Pathans as they are called here) is quite small. Bear in mind a overwhelming majority of them voted to join with Pakistan during the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. There were some such as Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai or Bacha Khan who never wanted to join Pakistan but wanted an autonomous state under India but that never happened. Their children still reside in Pakistan and have their own political parties(Pakhtunkhawa Awami mili party is led by the son of Samad and the Awami National Party is led by the grandson of Bacha). Pakistan has had plenty of Pathans in position of importance e.g. Pakistans first military ruler Field Marshal Ayub Khan, 2nd military ruler General Yahya Khan, our chief nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer just to name a few. Even today they call themselves Paki rather than afghanis or a separate nations despite the emergence of TTP, the war in waziristan and constant shilling of Afghans and western countries that show our Pashtuns(just like Baluchis and sometimes Sindhis) as some mistreated minority despite the fact there are 30 million Pasthuns in Pakistan and of Paki nationality(2nd largest group after Punjabis and there are more Pashtuns in Pakistan than Afghanistan). Ofcourse there are problems, that is bound to happen in a country made up of different ethnicity and united on Islam and nationalism but for all intents and purposes they are Pakis and not someone else. >how do they see their counterparts in afghanistan? Some Pashtuns tribes are large enough that they are situated on both sides of the border and maintain family ties but the Pathans maintain that they are Pakis not afghanis and some will even turn violent if you call them Afghani. >how do they get along with the average pakistani? Normally nigga. They are part of our country so they get fucked just like everyone else.

>>147690 >and he's not 100% wrong on KSA support for ISIS, as Maghrebois has said the political salafiya and the jihadi salafiya are at odds, and have different aims as IS is opposed to the KSA government > am sure some KSA officials in government donate arms and money to IS >implying the government or civil servant are the sole sponsor of foreign terrorists you do realize that the land is full of princes loaded with money that are sponsoring their own groups too? are you also aware that the government is paying salafi preachers that are at odds with the government to keep it shut? there is a lot of salafi preachers that left KSA to sage Jihad because of the governments bulshit and even more would be at the Saudi's throats with their followers the day the gibs run out. >>147698 >The Saudi was talking about the KSA govt specifically, I am on the same page with you on what you mentioned. here's the nuance i have, if the government does nothing about these sponsors, then it's also part of the sponsors which makes his "muh government didn't know anything about that, we wuz innocent in this process" void
>>147699 Agreed, but lets be honest, the KSA is only one bad famine or other disaster from implosion, hence MbS' reforms to attempt to hold it all together and gin up some more Western support and gibs
I don't think the KSA govt has much control, or even wants to risk clamping down on these people too much as they fear repercussions in the future, so yes they are complicit, but also cucked
>>147702 >I don't think the KSA govt has much control, >can prevent the ijtihadi salafi from making fatwas agains the royal family wether it be in a friday preach, through the internet or in secret jihadi reunions conspiring to take down the royal family >can't prevent people from sending money to terrorists abroad they know very well what they're doing, and i wouldn't be surprised if USA had a hand in preventing the government from preventing that after all they were the one sponsoring islamism in arab countries to counter the pro USSR pan arabism >clamping down on these people too much as they fear repercussions in the future people in secret political prisons are as dangerous as a vegetable, the comparison isn't random :^)
>>147703 fair points, but funneling cash in a country flooded with oil money and attempting open revolt are 2 different things, and the wealthy KSA salafists are not as willing to make themselves uncomfortable as they remain so while spreading havoc to places like Syria and Iraq. Of course I agree with you, the KSA govt is probably not really trying to clamp down on money funneling, as long as jihad isn't hitting home then they still stand to benefit.
Maybe MbS' purges a few months ago are attempts at clearing these elements as he sees the way to win against Iran is to cozy up with Israel instead. Don't get me wrong I am not implying MbS has a redemption arc starting or anything, but instead his close relationship with Israel and the US are better options than allowing jihadist funding to run rampant. I don't think KSA funding to these groups will stop, but I think MbS wants to put some distance between his govt and the funding by certain leaders in his govt and wealthy citizens who got caught up in the purges.
>>147707 meh, id on't believe one second in the "muh reforms" if anything the worst thing that MBS could do is changing the structural status quo in saudi internal politics as his already illegitimate seat is even more so threatened as he shows his incompetency at finishing the yemen war and getting parts of KSA territory under assault+ the occasional tochka unless he's retarded to the point of sawing the branch he's siting on, for me this is all a front to give his reign a good sight to westerners as he's trying to appeal to them in his regional cold war against the "non-modernizing" Iran
>>147708 >for me this is all a front to give his reign a good sight to westerners as he's trying to appeal to them in his regional cold war against the "non-modernizing" Iran Yes, that was my point. In getting close to the Jews and closer to us he probably thinks it will be good optics, his reforms are clearly a front to become more appealing to those who would back him. >>148869 well a few possibilities in this region, namely number one is this group is very well entrenched and capable at fighting everyone off, including the Taliban. You may remember when I was giving you some info on this pocket, their commander Qari Hekmat, was a defector from the Taliban and was killed in a US drone strike earlier this year. This pocket is entirely cut off from the main group of IS-K in Nangarhar. Hekmat still held off Taliban and ANA, no one could make progress on his area. Once his death was announced it was falsely assumed that this IS-K pocket would be weakened, in talking with Pingu about this I figured the Uzbeks would close ranks and this faction would be unaffected, which is exactly what happened. As to other possibilities as to why US specops may have been pushed off if you venture into conspiracy theory you could make the assumption that we don't want to defeat this IS-K pocket because they are very good at killing Taliban, but if that were the case you would also have to wonder why we would have killed Qari Hekmat in the first place if it was believed that he was the only glue that held this IS-K faction together. Overall my theory is that this pocket is just really strong, with veteran Uzbeks (known to be the best ISIS troops, even in Iraq and Syria) and this area probably isn't a very big priority for the US right now, so maybe this was more of a recon style mission to test their strength after the death of Hekmat.
>>148875 >we don't want to defeat this IS-K pocket because they are very good at killing Taliban pretty sure any sane man would want the opposite >and this area probably isn't a very big priority for the US right now, so maybe this was more of a recon style mission to test their strength after the death of Hekmat. makes sense

Libya’s rival leaders meet at Paris conference to agree on political roadmap
Libya’s rival leaders are meeting in Paris to agree on a political roadmap, including elections, in an effort to bring order to the country’s chaos, AP reports. Representatives of 20 countries, including Libya’s neighbors, regional and European powers, the US and international organizations were expected on Tuesday at the Elysee Palace. The UN-backed conference aims to secure parliamentary and presidential elections in the North African country, if possible by the end of 2018. The French president’s office said Libyan leaders have agreed in principle to a non-binding accord. Libya is split between rival governments in the east and west, each backed by an array of militias.
Rival Libyan factions agree to hold elections on December 10 – PM advisor
Rival Libyan factions agreed on Tuesday to hold parliamentary and presidential elections on December 10, an advisor to Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Seraj said after a meeting in Paris. Taher al-Sonni tweeted that four parties gathered at the talks had also agreed on finalizing a constitutional base for elections by September 16. The Paris meeting included eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar, Tripoli PM Seraj, and the leaders of rival parliamentary assemblies. The gathering aims to urge them to agree to general principles for ending Libya’s crisis and moving towards elections. A draft document prepared ahead of the meeting includes the call for the immediate unification of the central bank and a commitment to support the creation of a national army, Reuters reported.

Erdogan, Putin discuss Syria, energy in phone call – report
The Turkish and Russian presidents discussed the situation in Syria and economic relations, especially in the energy sector, in a phone call on Tuesday, a source in Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office said. Erdogan and Vladimir Putin reportedly expressed satisfaction with progress on the Akkuyu nuclear plant and Turkish Stream pipeline projects. They also emphasized the importance of using local currencies in bilateral trade. The two leaders noted the importance of achievements through the Astana process, stating that it is necessary for the Syrian government and the opposition to act constructively and ensure that the process proceeds under the scope of the UN framework, according to sources. Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s opposition to the inclusion of the PKK-linked People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the political process, Daily Sabah reported. It added that the Russian and Turkish leaders also agreed that Syria should not become a conflict zone in the dispute between Israel and Iran.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan“reaffirmed commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria”in a phone call on Tuesday, the Kremlin press service said. They continued their“dialogue on the situation in Syria”and emphasized the importance of finding a political solution based on achievements made within the Astana process, according to the statement. The phone call had been initiated by Ankara. Putin and Erdogan also discussed Russian-Turkish relations, focusing on agreements reached at the Ankara meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council on April 3. In particular, they“welcomed the completion of talks on Russian gas transit via Turkey,”the press service said.
>Israel responds to Gazan rockets with most powerful attack in 4 years
The barrage of 28 mortars was fired from the enclave earlier in the day, most of them were claimed to be intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, blamed the Hamas organization for the recent attacks, promising to respond “forcefully” to the barrage.
“Israel takes a grave view of the attacks on it and its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip. The IDF will respond to these attacks forcefully,” he said during a conference in northern Israel, referring to the Israel Defence Forces. According to the IDF, following Netanyahu’s statement, the Israeli air forces hit at least 35 targets at the positions of the Islamic Jihad movement in Southern Gaza, which Israel believed to be behind the attack. Later the IDF stated, that the strikes it performed in Gaza Strip were the most powerful for the last four years. The IDF listed six military compounds, munition storage warehouses, naval targets, and terror headquarters among the attacked targets.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman commented the issue, saying the strikes against Gaza are “only the beginning.” “Today at midday, we massively and powerfully attacked terrorist infrastructure, including an additional tunnel, across the Gaza Strip. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have already paid a heavy price and the bill has just been presented to them. We have no intention to let it pass,” Lieberman added. After the activation of the system IDF reported about two more missile attacks from the Gaza Strip, which were intercepted with the Iron Dome air defense system.
During the day the sirens had gone off on five occasions in the settlements along the border with the Gaza Strip — Hof Ashkelon, Eshkol, Sha’ar HaNegev, and Merchavim Regional Councils, the Ashkelon industrial area, and Sderot. The situation on the border escalated on Monday, particularly after an Israeli tank attacked a militant observation post in response to an attempted violation of the border by two Palestinians.
BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday that the removal of Iranian forces from southern Syria is not enough to pleas Israel. “‘Removal of Iranian forces from southern Syria alone won’t suffice,” Netanyahu told the audience at the Ma’alot-Tashiha Galilee Conference, as quoted by Ynet news.
“We won’t allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria as well as transferring dangerous weapons from Syria to Lebanon or manufacturing it in Lebanon,” the Israeli premier continued. Netanyahu would then go on to tell the audience that he is against any Iranian presence in Syria. “I would like to underline that we are operating against an Iranian entrenchment across Syria’s entire territory,” Netanyahu added.
BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:40 P.M.) – The Turkish-backed rebels in the Afrin region of northwest Aleppo have once again clashed over which group controls the residential homes. According to the pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the Al-Hamza Division and Al-Mu’asim Division clashed over which group takeover the residential homes inside Afrin city.
“The clashes took place near Kawa roundabout in Afrin city, between a group of al-Hamzah Division and a group of al-Mu’asim Division, again the backdrop of a disagreement between other groups about the takeover of residential houses in the area,” SOHR reported. This is not the first time that Turkish-backed groups have clashed over properties and loot, as this has become a common occurrence in the Afrin region.
BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:15 P.M.) – The Syrian military is preparing to launch their largest offensive of the year, as their troops prepare to descend on the rebel-held areas in the southern provinces of Al-Quneitra and Dara’a. However, it appears that the rebel forces are not the only ones opposing this Syrian military offensive, as the government finds themselves facing heavy criticism from the U.S. and their allies.
Among those nations concerned with the Syrian military’s upcoming offensive is Israel; they have repeatedly interfered in the government’s previous attacks in the Al-Quneitra Goverorate. While some reports alleged on Monday that the Syrian government was given the green light to launch this offensive from Israel, a Syrian military source told Al-Masdar News, today, that they are not concerned with nor seeking Israel’s approval on the matter. The source continued that no Iranian-backed forces will participate in this offensive, adding that reports of a large Hezbollah and Iranian presence in southern Syria are false.
>@IvanSidorenko1 #Syria #Quneitra - Syrian Reporter 3 Hours Ago : Massive Reinforcements from the #SRG Syrian Republican Guard we’re heading to Quneitra This Morning
BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has completed preparations for an imminent offensive against rebel-held areas in southwestern Syria, a non-Syrian commander in a military alliance that backs Damascus said on Tuesday, raising the prospect of a major new escalation. However, a rebel commander in the Deraa region of the southwest told Reuters there was no sign of mobilization for such an assault and accused Damascus of waging psychological warfare. Nevertheless, rebels had prepared defenses, he said. The rebel-held southwest has come into focus after the Syrian government, backed militarily by Iran and Russia, crushed the last besieged rebel enclaves near Damascus and north of the city of Homs. Damascus has vowed to recover the whole country.
The southwest is of concern to the United States, which last year brokered a “de-escalation” deal with Jordan and President Bashar al-Assad’s Russian allies, which has largely contained the war near the frontier with Israel.
The United States warned on Saturday it would take “firm and appropriate measures” in response to any violations of the ceasefire in that area. While Assad is militarily unassailable in the Syrian conflict, swathes of territory at the frontiers with Iraq, Turkey and Jordan and Israel remain outside his control. The role of outside powers in these areas complicates further gains by Damascus. The pro-Assad commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Syrian army’s preparations for the assault were complete. “The Syrian army will wage all the battles and has now become strong and capable,” the commander said.
Israel wants Iran-backed forces removed from areas near its frontier - and from Syria in general. Iran-backed Shi’ite militias, often spearheaded by Lebanon’s Hezbollah, have played a critical role fighting in support of Assad. Russia said on Monday that only Syrian army troops should be at the southern border with Jordan and Israel. On Tuesday, its foreign ministry said Russia, the United States and Jordan had agreed to meet about the “de-escalation” zone, RIA news agency reported.
An article published in the pro-Damascus al-Watan newspaper said signs “on the horizon” indicated the southern battle was near as “final touches” were put in place. But the rebel commander, Colonel Nassim Abu Arra of the Youth of Sunna Forces, told Reuters there was no sign of an imminent attack. “So far there are no indications of that. I am speaking from a position on the frontlines,” he said in a telephone interview. “But there are rumors, a psychological war,” he said.
In the last week, he said several military convoys had left government-held parts of Deraa city heading north, saying he believed these to be Iran-backed forces being evacuated from the region. They had not been replaced, he added. His faction was keeping the United States and Jordan abreast of the situation on the ground. “We are taking from them reassurances that the southern region is subjected to the de-escalation agreement and ceasefire,” he said. But his fighters had still prepared defenses. “I assure you the opposition forces have taken a number of measures … including digging trenches and tunnels to prevent the regime from launching any attack,” he said.
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Lukoil, Russia’s second biggest oil producer, said on Tuesday it had decided not to go ahead with plans to develop projects in Iran at the moment due to the threat of U.S. sanctions, a company official said.
The United States plans to impose new sanctions on Iran after pulling out of a 2015 agreement between Iran and major world powers to limit Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
“Considering the latest developments, I guess, it’s too early to say what our plans (about Iran) will be. For the moment, basically, we have everything on hold,” the official told a conference call which followed publication of Lukoil’s first-quarter results on Monday.
Lukoil said on Monday its first-quarter net profit rose to 109.1 billion rubles ($1.8 billion), up 75 percent on the previous year with the help of rising oil prices. The official said that company’s focus remained on its domestic business. “We don’t plant to do anything material on the international M&A side,” he said. Lukoil has been in talks with Iran over development of Abe Timur and Mansuri oilfields.
ANKARA/PARIS (Reuters) - Iran and European powers have made good progress in talks to end the conflict in Yemen as Tehran has shown itself willing to push for a ceasefire and ease the humanitarian crisis there, according to officials on both sides.
The talks were launched in February as part of efforts to avert President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of a 2015 nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Tehran. Created on a separate track to the nuclear negotiations, they are meant to address U.S. concerns over Iran’s regional role and show Washington that Europe could prise compromises from Tehran.
The focus has mainly been on the conflict in Yemen, where arch foes Shi’ite Iran and Sunni Muslim kingdom Saudi Arabia are fighting for influence. Iran denies Saudi accusations of giving financial and military support to Yemen’s Houthis in a civil war and blames the deepening crisis on Riyadh. “Because of the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, we have agreed to work with Britain, France and Germany to end the conflict in Yemen,” a senior Iranian official told Reuters.
“The aim is to secure a ceasefire to help those innocent civilians. We will use our influence to bring our allies to the negotiation table.”
Three European diplomats said the talks had progressed significantly and were going in the right direction.
In November, Iran for the first time acknowledged being involved in the Yemen conflict when Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of its elite Revolutionary Guards, said Iran provided advisory assistances to its allies in Yemen.
To shield Iran from new U.S. sanctions, the European powers have been pressing Tehran to be less aggressive in the region, including in the civil war in Yemen. “The Iranians have given indications that they are now willing to offer their services to liaise with the Houthis to move forward,” said a European official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“The Iranians are now at least recognizing there is a channel. They obviously aren’t saying they control the Houthis and they never will, but they recognize they have a certain influence on them and ready to use those channels. That’s new.”
Iran’s senior nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi said talks on the Yemen conflict were being held in parallel to the nuclear talks with the European signatories of the accord, under which Iran accepted to curb its nuclear work in return for the lifting of international sanctions.
“The nuclear deal is not linked to the regional issues … Iran will not hold talks on its influence in the region, except for Yemen because of the humanitarian crisis there,” Abbas Araqchi told state TV on Sunday. A second European official said the discussions with Iranians on Yemen were going “very well”.
“They (Iranians) are telling us they are ready to work on the ceasefire, but they say the Saudis aren’t ready. So it’s a bit of a chicken and egg scenario. We need this now to get into something concrete,” said the second official.
Neither Saudi, Yemeni or Houthi officials responded to requests for comment. Washington, Paris and London all back Riyadh in its intervention in Yemen and all supply weapons and intelligence to Saudi Arabia.
“This is a humanitarian effort … The issue has almost been solved. We are working on a framework,” said another Iranian official.
Araqchi said Iran and European powers will meet in mid-June in Brussels to further discuss the Yemen conflict.
France, which has stressed the importance of supplementing the nuclear deal with substantive talks on other issues, is due to co-host an international conference on Yemen with Saudi Arabia in Paris in June to assess aid needs for the country and possibly contribute to reviving U.N.-backed peace talks.
However, it is unclear how talks between Iran and the European parties of the deal would fit into the U.N. Yemen mediator Martin Griffiths’ efforts.
Griffiths said in April he wanted to present a plan for negotiations within two months to end the conflict, but warned that any new military offensives could “take peace off the table.”
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan said in a phone call that they supported Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.
The phone call was organized at Turkey’s request and also touched on the Turkstream offshore gas pipeline across the Black Sea, the Kremlin said in a statement.
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia, the United States and Jordan have agreed to hold a meeting about the fate of Syria’s southern “de-escalation” zone, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Tuesday, the RIA news agency reported. Russia said on Monday only Syrian army troops should be on the country’s southern border with Jordan and Israel, after Washington warned of “firm measures” over truce violations in the region. Jordan also said on Monday it was discussing developments in southern Syria with Washington and Moscow and that all three parties agreed on the need to preserve the de-escalation zone which they brokered last year and which has reduced violence.
GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations called on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to provide information about women’s rights activists arrested ahead of the lifting of a ban on women driving that is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reform program.
The U.N. human rights office said the government should ensure the women and other campaigners in custody have due process. The crackdown on women’s rights activists, just weeks before a much-hyped lifting of the has revived doubts about Prince Mohammed approach to reforms in the kingdom.
Nearly a dozen prominent activists, mostly women who for years urged reforms that are now being implemented, were arrested this month, drawing a rare expression of concern from the U.N. human rights office on Tuesday.
Six women and three men are known to remain in custody facing very serious allegations that “could lead to draconian sentences”, U.N. human rights spokeswoman Liz Throssell told a Geneva briefing. Their exact whereabouts is unknown and most of them have only been permitted to make a single telephone call to their families since they were arrested, she said. “We urge the Saudi Arabian authorities to reveal their locations, and ensure their rights to due process guarantees,” Throssell said. “If, as it appears, their detention is related solely to their work as human rights defenders and activists on women’s issues, they should be released immediately.”
They are entitled to the right to legal representation, to know the nature of the charges against them, to have access to their families and to be brought before an impartial tribunal within a reasonable period of time, she added. Saudi authorities should provide information about a Saudi prince, Nawaf Talal Rasheed, reported to be missing since being deported from Kuwait on May 12 and to make clear if was arrested and on what grounds, she said. He is also Qatari national.
Saudi Arabia rejects Macron comment over Lebanon’s Hariri ‘detention’
Saudi Arabia has rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s comment that Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri had been held against his will in the kingdom, AFP said. Hariri announced on November 4 that he was stepping down in a televised address from Riyadh, only to rescind the statement the following month after Macron’s intervention. In an interview broadcast on Friday by BFMTV, Macron described how he waded into the crisis.“Lebanon has since emerged from a serious crisis where, as I recall, a prime minister was held in Saudi Arabia for several weeks,”Macron said. On Tuesday, a Saudi Foreign Ministry spokesman denied that Hariri was held against his will.“What the French president said… that the kingdom had held Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri is incorrect,”the Saudi Press Agency quoted him as saying.“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was and still supports the stability and security of Lebanon and Prime Minister Hariri,”he added.

>ISIS launches major offensive in east Homs to advance towards Palmyra
BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:50 A.M.) – The so-called Islamic State (ISIS) has launched a major offensive, tonight, to breakout of their large pocket in the Badiya region and advance towards the historical city of Palmyra.
According to a military source in the Homs Governorate, ISIS began the assault by storming the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions to the east of the T-3 Pumping Station.
In particular, the Islamic State militants struck the Syrian Army’s positions inside the strategic Hamimah area, which was once the terrorist group’s stronghold in the Badiya region.
While no gains have been reported, both parties are currently involved in a fierce battle, with the Islamic State on the offensive.
Since the evacuation of their forces from southern Damascus to the Badiya region, the Islamic State has repeatedly launched big assaults in a bid to expand their territory.
>Explosion, gunfire heard near interior ministry in Kabul – report
A loud explosion followed by gunfire was heard on Wednesday near Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry compound in the capital, Kabul. Police officials inside the compound were quoted as saying they believed it was a militant attack on the ministry. Wednesday’s incident comes after a series of deadly attacks in Kabul this year, which have killed and wounded hundreds of people. A US military spokesman said on Wednesday that more than 50 senior Taliban commanders were killed in an artillery strike on a meeting in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand, Reuters reported. The attack in the district of Musa Qala in Helmand, one of the heartlands of the Taliban insurgency, was a significant blow to the insurgents, according to Lt. Col. Martin O’Donnell, spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan.

>>150524 if I had to guess I would say strategically the badiya pocket isn't high priority for 2 reasons. 1- it is fairly isolated from most major cities, hit and run attacks may be a recurring issue, but primarily the forces left behind are NDF meat shields, with some SAA support, so nothing of much value is being lost 2- It provided a place to transport the IS fighters still left in Damascus, had they cleared the desert pocket the SAA wouldn't have had anywhere to take them.
The SAA are probably hoping to move the IS affilated Jaysh Khalid bin al-Walid near the Golan there too once the Daraa op begins, but I am not so sure those guys will want to go out there since they aren't ISIS proper, only affiliated, and the majority of JKBW are local people who grew up in the Yarmouk Basin

US President Donald Trump infamously called his Syrian counterpart ‘animal Assad’ in one of his tweets. When asked whether he has a nickname for Trump, Assad told RT he does not use such language. >This is not my language, so, I cannot use similar language. This is his language. KABUL, Afghanistan — Gunmen dressed as U.S. soldiers and traveling in a captured Humvee set off a suicide bomb and then tried to shoot their way into the Afghan Interior Ministry before being killed by government forces Wednesday, security officials said.
It’s not clear who carried out the attack — one of at least three that occurred in Afghanistan on Wednesday — that targeted the Interior Ministry’s compound a few hundred yards from Kabul’s airport and a coalition air base where Americans and their allies train Afghan forces.
Just after midday, a car bomb exploded at the entrance to the ministry compound, said Hashmat Stanekzai, spokesman for Kabul police.
“After that, several gunmen tried to get into the ministry, but they faced resistance by our security forces,” he said. “The attackers were not able to enter the ministry.”
The firefight ended a little more than two hour later, he said, and all the gunmen had been killed. He could not say how many other casualties there were besides the assailants.
At least one of the attackers was captured, Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in the country, told reporters at the Pentagon via video conference later in the day.
But Nicholson disputed claims by the Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate that it was responsible for the attack. Both the Taliban and ISIS have carried out attacks that have left hundreds dead in recent months. The Taliban, however, had not claimed responsibility for the attack.
The tactics smacked more of the Taliban’s Haqqani network, Nicholson said, referring to a brutal branch of the insurgent group considered its most capable. For example, their use of American uniforms and their targeting of a government facility.
“We have seen [American] uniforms used in the past,” the American general said. “It’s been well over a year since we’ve seen that.”
ISIS attacks tend to be person-borne, involving suicide vests, and indiscriminate, often targeting Shiite minorities in the country.
The use of military uniforms and a vehicle was a concern, Nicholson said, as it might cause a hesitation or delay in responding to the attack. However, he said the Afghans responded as they should have.
“They did exactly what they were supposed to do,” he said.
The guards at the gate recognized that the uniforms were dated versions of those worn by U.S. soldiers and demanded the attackers exit the vehicle. That’s when the fighting started, Nicholson said, and one of the attackers detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and some of his fellow gunmen.
The Crisis Response Unit 222, a special police unit, responded to the attack and quickly killed the remaining assailants, Nicholson said.
Seven gunmen had attempted to enter the compound, said Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish. One police officer was killed and five were wounded, he said.
Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe said on Twitter that the nearby coalition base was locked down for about an hour after the attack. In a later tweet, he said there were concerns that an attacker in a U.S. military uniform was on the base and that head counts were underway.
There was no breach of the NATO compound, said Lt. Col. Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for the coalition in Kabul. He said all coalition troops had been accounted for after the attack.
Two other attacks occurred elsewhere in Afghanistan on Wednesday.
In eastern Logar province, suicide bombers attacked a police station in the morning, killing at least three police officers, including the station’s commander and the deputy director of traffic police for the provincial capital, Pul-e Alam, local media reported. A suicide car bomb was set off at the gates before three gunmen in suicide vests stormed the compound.
Four more police officers and eight civilians were wounded in the attack. Among the wounded were two children, the media reported. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Another early morning attack struck the capital of Kandahar province, when a suicide car bomb blast killed three civilians and wounded 13 others, a provincial official told reporters. It is unclear who carried out the attack, though the southern province is the Taliban’s historic heartland.
Afghan officials have said recently that their forces were battling militants in at least half of the country’s 34 provinces and that at least seven provincial capitals were under threat.
On Tuesday, Taliban fighters overran the center of Chora district in the southern province of Uruzgan. A provincial official who spoke to Stars and Stripes on condition of anonymity confirmed that Afghan security forces had withdrawn from the governor’s compound and police headquarters.
The militants were also threatening to overrun parts of Takhar province in the country’s north this week, claiming to have seized arms and equipment after seizing police checkpoints in the besieged Kwajah Ghar and Dasht-e Qalah districts along the Tajikistan border.
The Kabul attack comes nearly one year after a massive car bombing near the diplomatic zone of the city, which killed several hundred people on May 31, 2017.
Nicholson credited the response to the latest attack, and the fact that there has been no “mega” vehicle-borne attack in the past 12 months as a sign of improving Afghan security forces capabilities.
“We’ve had a slight reduction in the number of vehicle-borne (improvised explosive devices),” Nicholson said. “We’ve also seen … a reduction in Taliban and Haqqani activity … because of the very focused counter-terrorism effort on the networks that attack Kabul.”
However, he said a purported drop in Taliban and Haqqani attacks has been offset by increasing ISIS attacks.
TALOQAN (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon on Wednesday overran the Dasht-i-Kala district of northern Takhar province and captured important buildings, local officials said.
Police Spokesman Col. Abdul Khalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban stormed security forces check-posts near district bazaar early at around 6:00am.
He added security forces have retreated from police headquarters and intelligence compound and currently the fighting was underway on the outskirts of district bazaar.
Eight security forces and 18 Taliban have been killed during the clash while the Taliban torched district and other government buildings in the district.
Taliban Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed capturing the district completely, destroying three tanks and killing 24 soldiers.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:00 A.M.) – A large number of Iranian-backed forces and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) personnel have arrived in the western countryside of the Deir Ezzor Governorate this evening, as they prepare for a major operation to clear the Badiya Al-Sham region in the vast Syrian Desert.
According to a Syrian military source in Damascus, the Iranian-backed forces and Syrian Arab Army troops were deployed from all over Syria to help with the upcoming operation to clear this desert area.
The source added that Iranian-backed troops from southern Syria were also part of this convoy of reinforcements.
However, the source could not specify if this move to redeploy the Iranian-backed forces to eastern Syria was part of the recent Russian-Israeli negotiations in Moscow.

>YPG/PKK terror group reaches oil deal with Assad regime The YPG/PKK terrorist group and the Syrian regime have reached an agreement on sharing oil from the Al-Omar oilfield -- one of the largest oilfields in YPG/PKK-occupied Deir ez-Zor province in eastern Syria, according to local sources.
Under the deal, the YPG/PKK will give 100 barrels of oil from the field to the Bashar al-Assad regime in return for 75 barrels of fuel, the sources said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to media.
The Al-Omar oilfield, the most productive field in war-ravaged Syria, is estimated to produce some 15,000 barrels of oil per day.
Last year, the YPG/PKK reached a deal for sharing the oil revenues in Hasakah province, which is held by the terrorist group.
The U.S-backed terror group occupies roughly 70% of the oil sources in Syria.
Energy sources in Deir ez-Zor
Located near Iraqi border, Deir Ez-Zor contains the largest energy sources in Syria.
There are 11 large oilfields in the eastern side of the Euphrates River, which cuts the province in two. These oilfields make up around one-third of the energy sources in whole Syria.
In September 2017, YPG/PKK terrorists captured the Conoco gas plant, the largest one in the northeastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
One month later, the terrorist group seized control of the Al-Omar oilfield.
The oil refineries in Syria, however, are still under the regime control.
Syria has just begun to emerge from a devastating civil war that began in early 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

In one of the biggest operations this year, the Houthi forces launched massive attack on the supply line of the UAE and Saudi-backed troops in the Hodeideh Governorate.
Not only were they able to cutoff the supply line, but the Houthis forces were also able to fully eliminate an entire regiment of UAE-backed fighters in the process.
According to the official media wing of the Houthi forces, their fighters stormed the Abu Haroun Regiment’s positions near the Hays District, resulting in over 75 dead and wounded.

Houthi said Israeli jets have been seen in Hodeideh’s skies over the past few days amid a push by Arab Coalition to seize the provincial capital, The Yemen-based Masirah TV network reported.
“Yemen is actually fighting against a Saudi-Zionist coalition,” he stated in reference to the Arab Coalition and their alleged ties to Israel.
The Arab Coalition has recently made a big push to capture the strategic city of Hodeideh, which is also the location of the last port under the control of the Houthi forces. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/houthi-leader-claims-israeli-warplanes-are-flying-over-western-yemen/ >ISIS prepares for last stand in strategic Syrian desert region BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:00 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) is getting desperate in eastern Syria after launching several failed attacks to breakout of the Badiya Al-Sham region.
Over the course of four days, the Islamic State has launched at least three attacks against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies in the Badiya Al-Sham region.
All of these Islamic State attacks have failed, despite the fact they have repeatedly attempted to use the element of surprise and poor weather to score new advances against the government troops.
With the Syrian Arab Army and Iranian-backed forces surrounding this entire desert region, ISIS finds themselves in a more desperate state, as they have virtually nowhere to go.
The Syrian government has nowhere to transport these terrorists to and the rebels and US-backed forces do not want them inside their territories either.
The best bet for these Islamic State militants is to secure a deal with the rebels and government which would allow them to settle in the Idlib Governorate temporarily.
However, the likelihood of the rebels agreeing to this is very slim, given that the Islamic State repeatedly attacked their positions in southern Idlib last year.
>Syrian military uncovers militant explosives workshop with Saudi-made chemicals BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:25 P.M.) – During their demining operation in southern Damascus on Sunday, the Syrian military uncovered a large explosives workshop that was once used by the militant groups.

The explosives workshop had chemical materials that were made in Saudi Arabia, the SANA report added.
At the same time, a one kilometer long tunnel was uncovered inside southern Damascus, as the Syrian military was moving through more areas.
UN official Diego Garcia-Sayan criticized Duterte after the president labelled Maria Lourdes Sereno, the Philippines chief justice, his “enemy” over her refusal to vote for a number of his government’s proposals.
Sereno was later removed from office by majority vote in the Supreme Court.
Speaking on Friday, Garcia-Sayan said the president’s actions sent a “clear message to all judges of the Philippines: In the so-called ‘war on drugs,’ you’re either with me or against me.”
In a televised address to reporters in the capital Manila on Sunday, Duterte dismissed the remarks, saying the human rights expert should not meddle in the country’s domestic affairs.
“Tell him (Garcia-Sayan) not to interfere with the affairs of my country. He can go to hell,” he said. “He is not a special person and I do not recognize his rapporteur title.”
The controversial leader, who came to power on the back of his promise to eradicate his country’s illegal drug trade, is infamous for making fiery statements at UN officials.
In April, he labelled UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein a “son of a whore” after he claimed the Filipino strongman was in need of “psychiatric evaluation.”
Later that same month, Duterte threatened to arrest a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court, arguing that she had no right to conduct investigations in the country. The prosecutor had been looking into allegations of crimes against humanity as the Philippines continues to wage its bloody war on drugs. Police say they have killed over 4,100 people in anti-drug operations since July 2016. However, human rights groups allege the number is at least three times higher. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/duerte-tells-un-official-to-go-to-hell/
>Iran not withdrawing its troops from Syria: military spox. BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:05 P.M.) – During his press conference in Tehran, the Spokesperson for the Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri, told reporters that Iran is not planning on withdrawing its troops from Syria.
Brigadier General Jazayeri then turned his attention to the U.S. forces in Syria, highlighting that they are operating without the approval of the Syrian government.
The Iranian commander’s comments come just days after the Israeli and Russian defense ministers met in Moscow to discuss the current situation in the southwestern provinces of Syria.
Iran has long maintained that their soldiers are not fighting in battles, but rather, advising the Syrian troops across the country.
Israel has accused Iran of building up its forces in Syria and using several bases across the country, which is something Tehran has vehemently denied. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/iran-not-withdrawing-its-troops-from-syria-military-spox/ >Russian warplanes respond to rebel violations in northern Latakia DAMASCUS, SYRIA (5:25 P.M.) – Positions for the jihadi groups stationed in northern Latakia countryside have come under air attack after militants repeatedly violated the de-escalation zone agreement.
For first time in months, Russian warplanes conducted several airstrikes targeting headquarters, gatherings and fortifications for Nusra as well other rebel groups in Kurd Mountain region.
The aerial bombardment comes after militants struck Syrian Army positions with artillery and ATGMs, killing and injuring scores of troops, and destroying vehicles.
SANA agency reported on Sunday, “Units of Syrian Arab Army thwarted infiltration attempt by terrorist groups of Daesh (ISIS) to the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor province, inflicting losses upon their ranks and equipment.”
The ISIS terrorists control the village of “Al-Sha’fah” launched a swift-assault targeting the Syrian positions along the western flank of Euphrates. however, the SAA units managed to repel their offensive.

>Important highway in central Syria to open for first time in 7 years BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:15 P.M.) – For the first time in seven years, the Homs-Hama Highway (M-5 Highway) will be opened to the public.
According to a government report, the highway is scheduled to be reopened on June 6th, as their construction crews finalize their repairs.
The highway was closed in late 2011 after the Free Syrian Army (FSA) took control of the Al-Rastan Plain, which is located just south of the Hama Governorate’s provincial border.
With the reopening of this highway, the Syrian economy should get a major boost, as the travel distance will be cut significantly short. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/important-highway-in-central-syria-to-open-for-first-time-in-7-years/ >Zahran Alloush’s most trusted advisers turns out to be Syrian Army spy BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:25 P.M.) – Another high ranking rebel commander has abandoned his militant group and rejoined the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) after several years of battle.
The former director and founder of the Signal Battalion in Jaysh Al-Islam, Khalil Ebour, was recently photographed in a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) uniform after spying on the militant group for years.
For years, Ebour was Zahran ‘Alloush’s most trusted adviser and confidant; however, unbeknownst to ‘Alloush, his adviser was actually a Syrian Army spy. Ebour played an imperative role in the last battle for Douma, as he gave the Syrian Arab Army information about all of Jaysh Al-Islam’s bases and their secrets.
>Syrian Army reportedly withdrew from north Aleppo DAMASCUS, SYRIA (6:00 P.M.) – A convoy for the Syrian Army was seen leaving the northern city of Tall Rifaat to the government-held Nubul and Zahraa towns southward amid conflicting reports of a Turkish-Russian agreement.
According to a rebel military commander, the retreated forces were basically stationed in side Tall Rifaat and Kafr Naya town to the south. However, the commander who belongs to one of the Turkish-backed FSA factions asserted that Syrian Army troops at the frontlines with rebel forces haven’t changed.
According to reports, the withdrawal comes as per a deal held earlier between Russian and Turkey whereby the latter shall take over Tall Rifaat and the surrounding areas in exchange of the Syrian Army re-establishing control over territories in west Hama countryside including the strategic Jisr al-Shughur.
The deal, according to the same reports, has been canceled – or at best cases delayed – following the deployment of Turkish observation posts in Jisr al-Shughur and the entrance of Russian troops into Tall Rifaat.

SANA reporter said that committees from the competent authorities on Sunday settled the legal status of several former rebels from the town of Yalda after they turned themselves into the authorities.
As part of the deal, the rebels were supposed to hand over their weapons and pledge not to carry out any act that could harm the security inside the country.
The officer supervising the settlement process told SANA that settling the legal status of the gunmen who wanted to stay in their homes in Yalda, Babila and Beit Sahm is ongoing.

>Deal or no deal? US forces to exchange al-Tanaf for Iran and Hezbollah in the south of Syria Russia and Damascus (and its allies) have agreed on a plan for the Syrian Army to liberate what remained of the south of Syria- Qunietra and Daraa. The deal will be discussed this week between senior members (Vice Ministers) of the Russian, US and Jordanian establishments where Damascus and Tehran are blessing the Russian effort and negotiation skills. The deal is clear: either the US pulls out of Tanf crossing or else there will be no deal and the Syrian Army will ask for the support of its allies to liberate the south. The Russian ball has been kicked onto the US field and it is now up to Washington. It can either decide to go to war alongside Israel against Damascus’s forces in the south, or it can pull out its occupation forces from the Syrian-Iraqi crossing.
The Syrian Army is gathering large forces to liberate the last pocket south of the capital Damascus where ISIS (under the name of Jaish Khaled Bin al-Waleed) and other jihadists and their allies occupy the part of southern of Syria bordering Israel and Jordan. Damascus and Amman are looking forward to seeing the Syrian Army regain the control of the borders and reopen the Naseeb crossing to restore one of the most important sources of income to both countries.
However, Israel is turning to Russia – and not the US – to ask for a guarantee that Iran and Hezbollah won’t establish bases on the borders and create a situation where the Syrian borders will be used as a platform to attack Israel in the future.
Russia, Syria and Iran have all agreed on the next step to be taken to liberate the south and for all parties involved to be content. The Israeli demands to see only the Syrian army on its borders won’t be met ‘for free’: there is a price to be paid and the price is the al-Tanf crossing currently occupied by the US forces.
The US forces also occupy part of north-east Syria and the main eastern commercial crossing between Iraq and Syria (al-Tanf). Actually, there is no direct benefit to the US to have forces in Syria – except to support Israel – and the control of the crossing serves either to push the thousands of militants trained by the Pentagon to attack Syrian territories (to no strategic avail) or to slow down the Syrian economy. This is why Russia and its allies expect Tel Aviv to put pressure on Washington to pull out its forces from al-Tanf in exchange for Israeli “peace of mind” on the borders. >cont
>>151097 However, there are several different scenarios possible here:
Israel accepts and asks the US to free the Syrian-Iraqi crossing. The Syrian Army will take control of the south by attacking the jihadists and their allies Israel refuses: the Syrian Army will attack the jihadists with its allies. If Israel reacts by bombing the attacking forces, Damascus and its allies have already established a new Rule Of Engagement (ROE) and will retaliate by hitting targets in the occupied Golan Heights and beyond. The risk of a spill-over war between Israel and Hezbollah and Iran is high. Is the Israeli internal front ready for a wider war? Israel and the US raise their demands and ask for the withdrawal of all Iranian forces from Syria: this is an impossible request to meet for Russia. Iran is based in Syria since the late President Hafez Assad allowed the Iranian revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to support the Lebanese resistance against the Israeli invasion in 1982. Moreover, Syria asked for the support of Iran and its allies in 2013, more than two years before the Russian intervention. Also, Tehran and Damascus – both members of the trio “Axis of the Resistance” (Syria, Iran, Hezbollah) – agree on all issues related to the war in Syria; how to conduct it and what political outcome should be reached. This harmony is not equal to the one between Moscow and Damascus. Thus, Russia is in no position to ask the Syrian government to impose an Iranian withdrawal from Syria for a price that the Syrian Army can impose with or without Israel’s consensus. Thus, Israel has limited space to manoeuvre: to go for a battle with unpredictable consequences against the “axis of the Resistance” and push President Bashar al-Assad to become aggressive, willing to hit Israel and turn from defensive to offensive. Otherwise, Israel could accept to minimise its gain by accepting the absence of Iran and its allies away from the borders.
In his last interview, Assad said that his only option was “to improve air defence, this is the only thing we can do, and we are doing it”. To the “Axis of the Resistance” this is a pure defensive attitude that doesn’t necessarily meet the way Israel should be faced. Iran and its allies would like to show Israel a more aggressive attitude by taking the offensive battle much further than Assad currently wishes. Therefore, the option to have only the Syrian Army on the Israeli occupied Golan heights and on the 1974 demarcation line is all to Israel’s advantage.
There are differences in the way Russia is handling the Syrian dossier with its close allies, though not enough to spoil the relationships. Russia would like to move forward with political reconciliation as fast as possible, ask Damascus to re-write the constitution and see the US out of Tanf, so that the occupation forces (US and Turkey) are concentrated only in the north.
Damascus would not ask Iran and its allies – today – to pull out now unless the danger was over. It has the intention of reviewing (or rather re-writing, as Moscow wishes) the constitution and seeking the withdrawal of all foreign occupation forces.
Regardless of whether the Israeli ‘has the guts’ to ask Syria which forces it can keep on its territory and which forces it can’t, what is certain is that both Russia and the “Axis of the Resistance” want the liberation of the south and would go along with asking Iran and Hezbollah to keep away far from the borders. The “Axis” seems very comfortable with the idea of leaving southern Syria, confident that local Syrian forces are today, after more than 7 years of war, very well equipped with warfare experience and strong ideology to tread an identical path with the “axis” in relation to their animosity to Israel. But now, the head of the US in al-Tanf, on a plate, is the non-negotiable price. https://ejmagnier.com/2018/06/03/deal-or-no-deal-us-forces-to-exchange-al-tanaf-for-iran-and-hezbollah-in-the-south-of-syria/

>Iraq and Iran swap Kirkuk oil in strategic boost for Tehran Iraq and Iran have begun exchanging crude oil, the Iranian oil ministry’s news agency SHANA said on Sunday, in a deal that will position Tehran to expand its interests in its most important Arab ally in the face of growing pressure from Washington.
Crude from the Kirkuk field in northern Iraq is being shipped by truck to Iran. Tehran will use the oil in its refineries and will deliver the same amount of oil to Iraq’s southern ports, on the Gulf.
After helping Iraq stifle a Kurdish push for independence last year, OPEC producer Iran positioned itself to take control of oil exports from the region’s giant Kirkuk field.
Baghdad agreed for the first time to divert crude from Kirkuk province, which it retook from the Kurds, to Iran, where it will supply a refinery in the city of Kermanshah.
The pact is likely to create unease in Saudi Arabia, which along with its ally the United States accuses Iran of trying to dominate the Middle East. Tehran denies the allegations.
REGIONAL RIVALRY Iran is locked in a proxy war with Saudi Arabia that has fueled instability in the region. As well as Iraq, it has been extending its influence in Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.
Faced with the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Tehran is expected by analysts to focus on preserving its interests in neighboring Iraq, where it is competing for influence with Washington.
Iran also faces a challenge from Iraqi Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The nationalist’s bloc secured a stunning victory in last month’s election by tapping growing public discontent with Iran’s sway in Iraq, and appealing to the poor.
Between 30,000 and 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Kirkuk crude will be delivered by the tanker trucks to Darreh Shahr in southwestern Iran, SHANA said.
Iraq and Iran plan to build a pipeline to carry the oil from Kirkuk to avoid having to use trucks.
The swap deal allows Iraq to resume sales of Kirkuk crude, which have been halted since Iraqi forces took back control of the fields from the Kurds in October 2017.
Even though talks between Baghdad and Tehran have been conducted between oil ministry officials and Chamber of Commerce, Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards are well positioned.
>US Coalition begins 2nd phase of east Syria offensive BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:00 A.M.) – The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Iraqi Armed Forces launched the second phase of their east Syria offensive against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) this past weekend.
The Coalition press service circulated a message citing representatives of the SDF, in which it claimed the Islamic State still maintains a significant presence on the Syrian border with Iraq.
“The Syrian Democratic Forces began the second phase of their offensive in eastern Syria today,” the Coalition statement began.
“The second phase of the offensive is aimed at clearing the remaining Islamic State areas in coordination with our Iraqi partners,” the statement continued.
“The Iraqi security forces also stepped up their presence along the border in order to prevent the escape of ISIS members from Syria to Iraq,” the coalition added.
>Heavy Israeli presence over Lebanese-Syrian border, Damascus on high alert BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:00 A.M.) – The Israeli Air Force is currently conducting several flights over the Syrian-Lebanese border amid fears of a potential attack in Syria, a military source in Damascus told Al-Masdar News
According to the military source, the Israeli jets are currently flying over the Lebanese-Syrian border region inside the ‘Akkar District.
The source added that the Syrian Air Defense’s are now on high alert and maintaining restraint, as they believe the Israeli Air Force may be provoking them to attack.
Israel often conducts flights over the Lebanese-Syrian border; however, they rarely fly as far north as the ‘Akkar District, which is also close to the Hezbollah bases in Al-Qusayr.

Suleyman Soylu, the head of the Interior Ministry of Turkey, stated yesterday that many areas in the Hakurk area in the northern part of Iraq came under the control of the Turkish armed forces.
According to Soylu, the Turkish forces advanced 26-27 km deep into Iraqi territory, with their ultimate goal being the Qandil Mountains, where the PKK camps are located.
“There will be quadrilateral cooperation between Turkey, the United States, Baghdad and Erbil, since the PKK is also the enemy of Erbil … We are determined to clear our borders from the PKK. Iraq’s support is key, because it is Iraqi land,” he continued.

>Iran Moves to Lift Its Nuclear Enrichment Capacity
Iran announced on Tuesday that it had completed a new centrifuge assembly center at the Natanz nuclear site, in a first step to increasing its enrichment capacity.
While Iran said it would keep enrichment within limits set by the 2015 nuclear accord, the center’s opening seemed to signal that it could swing to industrial-level enrichment if that agreement, which the United States withdrew from last month, should further unravel.
The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, told state television that the center’s construction had been “in line with our safeguard commitments but not publicly announced.”
A spokesman for the Iranian nuclear agency, Behrouz Kamalvandi, said a letter had been sent to the International Atomic Energy Agency explaining the action. He also told the semiofficial Iranian Students’ News Agency that Tehran would increase its capacity to produce uranium hexafluoride, a feedstock for centrifuges.
It was unclear whether the assembly center would actually begin to produce new centrifuges.
Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran stopped enriching uranium to the 20 percent level that would allow for rapid development of a nuclear weapon and agreed to a limit of under 5 percent. It will adhere to that limit, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in a speech on Monday.
It was also uncertain whether the opening of the centrifuge plant would have any significant impact on Iran’s nuclear program, which continues to be closely monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
When Tehran agreed in 2015 to roll back its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international and United States sanctions, European companies rushed to enter the Iranian market. European governments have been working to keep the deal alive and protect those investments after President Trump dismayed many on the Continent by withdrawing and reimposing banking sanctions.
However, the American sanctions would still be a major problem, particularly for multinational companies, and several European firms have already announced plans to pull out of Iran. On Monday, the French group PSA, the maker of Peugeot and Citroën cars, which produces 440,000 vehicles a year in Iran, started closing its joint ventures with local auto manufacturers, though PSA said it would seek a waiver from the United States to maintain that production level.
In his speech on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei warned the Europeans that Iran’s patience was limited, but analysts said that Tehran’s demands of guaranteed purchases of Iranian oil and free bank transfers with the European Union might exceed what the bloc could deliver.
“The Europeans expect the Iranian nation to tolerate and grapple with the sanctions, to give up their nuclear activities, which is an absolute requirement for the future of the country, and also to continue with the restrictions that have been imposed on them,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. “I would tell these governments that this bad dream will not come true.”
The Trump administration has shown no outward willingness to compromise on Iran. If anything, it has hardened its position that any companies that engage with Iran do so at their own peril.
In a speech on Tuesday in Washington, the Treasury under secretary in charge of sanctions enforcement, Sigal Mandelker, said that the administration views Iran as a haven for terrorism financing, duplicity and human rights abuses.
“The Iranian regime will deceive your companies, undermine the integrity of your financial systems, and put your institutions at risk of our powerful sanctions,” Ms. Mandelker said. “You must harden your financial networks, require your companies to do extra due diligence to keep them from being caught in Iran’s deceptive web, and make clear the very significant risks of doing business with companies and persons in Iran.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/world/middleeast/iran-nuclear-deal.html?
>U.S. Warns United Arab Emirates Against Assault on Yemeni Port Hodeidah
The United States has warned its close ally the United Arab Emirates not to launch an assault on Yemen's port city of Hodeidah, which United Nations experts fear could precipitate a new humanitarian crisis, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.
The warning was issued as Emirati-backed Yemeni forces moved within 6 miles (10 km) of the Red Sea port, a lifeline for humanitarian supplies for the country's war-wracked populace. The port is controlled by Yemen's Houthi movement.
U.N. officials have warned that an assault on Hodeidah, which has a population of about 600,000, would cause a humanitarian calamity. A U.N. contingency plan projects that in the worst-case scenario of a prolonged siege, tens of thousands could die.
"In terms of an operation on Hodeidah, we've been quite clear that we want to engage on the political track," a Western official said on condition of anonymity, adding that U.N. envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths "now has the best chance of anyone in quite some time of getting it moving."
"This is a point that we've made at the top level," the official added. "The Saudis and Emiratis have made clear that they would not move without a joint understanding from their friends and partners of what the next steps are - what the day after will be - if there were an assault on Hodeidah."
U.S. officials met at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the crisis, two sources with knowledge of the meeting said. It was unclear whether any decisions were reached.
A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said Washington opposed any effort by the Emirates and Yemeni troops it backs to seize the city.
"The United States has been clear and consistent that we will not support actions that destroy key infrastructure or that are likely to exacerbate the dire humanitarian situation that has expanded in this stalemated conflict," said the spokesperson, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter and asked not to be named.
"We expect all parties to abide by the Law of Armed Conflict and avoid targeting civilians or commercial infrastructure," the spokesperson said.
The United States and the Emirates are close economic and security allies, working together against militant groups in Yemen and elsewhere.
Any direct American support to an Emirati ground offensive against Hodeidah would mark a major departure from U.S. policy toward Yemen, which has sought to focus U.S. military activity against al Qaeda-affiliated militants.
The United States also has repeatedly urged the Saudi-led coalition, both under President Donald Trump and his predecessor, Barack Obama, to prevent civilian casualties.
Critics of Washington have said, however, that its refueling of Saudi-led coalition jets, arms sales and limited U.S. intelligence support make it complicit in civilian casualties caused by the coalition.
>Rebels, ISIS reportedly negotiate ceasefire in southern Syria town ahead of Syrian Army offensive BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:20 A.M.) – The Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamic State (ISIS) are negotiating a ceasefire inside a west Dara’a Governorate town, pro-opposition activists reported this morning.
According to the activists, the FSA and Jaysh Khaled bin Walid (ISIS faction in Daraa) leadership are holding their negotiations inside the town of Tasil, which is located near the front-lines of both forces in western Dara’a.
The talks of a ceasefire in west Dara’a come just days before the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies launch a large-scale offensive in southern Syria.
>US-backed forces release footage of their troops capturing new town in northeast Syria BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:30 A.M.) – The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) released footage this morning of their troops seizing a new town inside the northeastern province of Al-Hasakah.
The SDF seized the town of Al-Fakkah on Tuesday, when they managed to overrun the Islamic State’s (ISIS) defenses and force the terrorist group to retreat southeast towards the Iraqi border.
Earlier this week, the SDF kicked off the second phase of Operation Jazeera Storm, with an emphasis on eliminating the Islamic State’s last remnants in the Al-Hasakah Governorate.
According to a military report, the Russian and Syrian air forces specifically targeted the jihadist rebel positions inside the Idlib Governorate towns of Ariha and Basniqoul.
Russian and Syrian jets also conducted raids along the provincial border of the Idlib and Hama governorate, with their primary targets being Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Izza.
>Syrian military kills several jihadists in southern Aleppo BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:30 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) stated on Wednesday that their forces carried out a powerful attack against a group of jihadist rebels that were gathering in southern Aleppo.
The Syrian Army identified the jihadist rebels as members of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham; they were preparing to move on the offensive against the government troops before they were attacked.
According to the military, the Syrian Army scored direct hits on the Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham gathering near the town of Khirbat Maratah, killing and wounding scores of these jihadist rebels.
Furthermore, a reporter from the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) stated that the army’s artillery units responded to another ceasefire breach in northwestern Aleppo by firing several shells and missiles towards the western part of the Al-Zahra’a Assocaition Quarter.
The attack resulted in the death of several militants and the destruction of one technical vehicle. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-military-kills-several-jihadists-in-southern-aleppo/ >YPG says troops fully moved out of Manbij The People’s Protection Units (YPG) have completed the withdrawal of their fighters from the Syrian city of Manbij (70 km from Aleppo) on Tuesday, says a statement of the YPG command released by Firat News Agency.
The statement says that the YPG members, who had been training the locals, left this city under an agreement with the Manbij Military Council.
According to Firat News Agency, the Kurdish troops seized Manbij from the terrorists of the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) on June 1, 2016.
They helped the locals create their own armed police. The YPG statement says that the militiamen “are now capable of supporting security in the city independently, and there is no need for Kurdish military councils anymore.”
The Al Mayadeen television channel links the withdrawal of the YPG fighters with the American-Turkish agreements concerning control over Manbij. On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu held negotiations with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington, during which the sides approved the so-called “roadmap” on the withdrawal of Kurdish troops from Manbij.
The YPG forces are the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an Arab-Kurdish armed coalition that is supported by Washington. Regardless of this fact, Ankara considers the YPG to be a terrorist organization and regards its presence near the Syrian-Turkish border as a threat to Turkey’s security. In March, the Turkish forces took control of Afrin (65 km from Aleppo), an administrative center that used to be controlled by the Kurdish fighters. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/ypg-says-troops-fully-moved-out-of-manbij/
>Developing: Syrian military attacks rebel forces near Turkish Army lines in Latakia BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:30 P.M.) – The Syrian military did not hesitate to strike the jihadist rebels in northern Latakia, today, as their jets and helicopters repeatedly pounded the militants near the Turkish Army’s lines in Jabal Al-Akrad.
According to a military source in Latakia, the attack began this morning, when a Syrian attack chopper launched several strikes against the jihadist rebels positioned inside the town of Kabbani near the Al-Ghaab Plain.
Following the helicopter strikes, the Syrian Air Force carried out a powerful attack that also targeted the same area.
As the jihadist rebels began to respond with heavy artillery, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) quickly engaged them with surface-to-surface missiles that they fired from the area just south of Kabbani.
With the Turkish military’s presence in northern Latakia, the Syrian Army is unable to launch ground attacks without interference from the troops loyal to Ankara.

This is clearing the territory of mines, joint patrolling of control in the de-escalation zones, providing humanitarian assistance and restoring the infrastructure. We expect to have your support, which would show our unity in the war on global terror and ensuring common security,” he stressed.

>1. SDF/YPG has begun to release captured foreign ISIS members and bring them back into ISIS territory, several Germans held in Northern Syria told me. Unlike in those public interviews were armed guards control and listen to every word, I spoke with them in confidence without guards. >4. When I asked the German Foreign Ministry about it, they told me that they also got reports about people being sent back from detention to ISIS territory, but have no further information and are unable to provide assistance in Syria. >7. VSSE says that the captured ISIS members are sent back for financial reasons. Several hundred FF from Europe alone were captured by SDF/YPG, yet European countries refuse to deal with the issue and leave their citizens in Syria. >8. It's wrong to leave them in Syria for a number of reasons. Most obvious: Their children are innocent and should be flown out of a warzone immediately. A German national told me that some children have already died under worsening conditions. >9. It's also wrong to drop Europe's Jihadis in Syria were they are a burden for Syrians. SDF/YPG now has to accommodate and guard them and will eventually let them free / bring them back to ISIS territory. >10. >US wants Saudi, UAE, Jordanian military presence in Syria – Kurdish politician Gelo Iso, the president of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party, shared with Sputnik that the representatives of the Arab states brought by the US to the negotiations with Syrian tribes, namely Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan, expressed their willingness to participate in rebuilding Syrian cities, especially Raqqa.
But the US wants more than just funding from Arab states to restore Syria — Washington wants the three states to establish a military presence in northern Syria, Iso added.
According to him, Washington wants to transfer responsibility for the Sunni-inhabited territories to them, but the Arab states are hesitating to give affirmative answer, as they feel it might be a possible trap from the US.
“Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE want to create forces of an Arab coalition in northern Syria, but several factors exist that make them waiver on this decision. The key factor is the possible reaction from Turkey, Russia and Iran, that might follow, if Arab forces deploy their troops to Syria,” the politician said.
Iso claimed that there is still no clarity with Arab states’ plans and so far they are only ready to supply humanitarian aid to Syria.

>US to re-focus campaign against IS in Afghanistan – Mattis BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:00 P.M.) – US counter-terrorism forces have a chance to “focus elsewhere” in Afghanistan, against IS-affiliated groups, US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday.
The chance is presented due to the Afghan government’s planned Eid Al Fitr ceasefire with the Taliban.
“For example, should the Taliban take full advantage of the ceasefire in the best interest of the Afghan people, then many of the surveillance assets we have overhead could be reoriented to ISIS-K or Al-Qaeda and other foreign terrorists who have no business being in Afghanistan in the first place,” Mattis said. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/us-to-re-focus-campaign-against-is-in-afghanistan-mattis/
>Albukamal update: Intense clashes ongoing as Syrian Army attempts to secure city after ISIS infiltration BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:45 P.M.) – Earlier today, the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization crossed the Euphrates River and launched a big assault on the strategic border-city of Albukamal.
According to a report from the area, the Islamic State managed to infiltrate the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses and enter the city after a fierce battle this morning.
Despite claims of repelling the attack, a military source told Al-Masdar that the battle is still ongoing, with the Syrian Army now on the offensive.
The source added that the Syrian Army is attempting to retake the areas that were seized by the Islamic State in Albukamal and they should be able to regain the lost ground shortly.
While the ISIS caught the Syrian military off guard, the terrorist group does not possess enough fighters to hold the areas they captured for very long.

Ironically enough we would be fighting against Iraq 3 years later after the war officially ended. and then invade Iraq again 12 years later.
Same with the U.S led support for the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan against the Soviets. Who knows what the world might have become if the U.S hadn't stepped in.
Maybe if Saddam was still in power Iraq wouldn't have the clusterfuck that is Al-queda and ISIS.

Also, the thing that keeps cracking me up is.. How the fuck they managed to get all those orange suits over and over? The moment they would've been searched at checkpoint and someone would discover them, they're shot on sight. Smuggling certain amounts also might not be easy becasue they might be well know for their use…
>>152619 I highly doubt that it's syrian mukhabarat first because they wouldn't do such staging and take pic as it would increase the risk of actual ISIS members realizing that they've been infiltrated and finding the moles through deduction and triangulation IMO it's ISIS doing the "ISIS stronk, baqyia wa tatamaddad" to show they're still strong and have a credible presence in idlib (ie attacking us will lead to brutal consequences and not cucking out) to bolster their ranks by appealing to HTS members who are tired of being stuck in idlib and realize HTS leaders are cucks

“The staffed video, after it is disseminated in the western media, should become new grounds for the US-led coalition to carry out a missile strike against Syrian state objects and to justify militants’ offensive against Syrian government troops on the eastern bank of Euphrates,” Konashenkov added.
The Free Syrian Army is currently positioned at the provincial border of the Deir Ezor Governorate, as they share a base with the U.S. forces at Al-Tanf.

“And for the first time there is a clear and formal commitment in the coalition program to Israel as a Jewish state. As Austrians we will support Israel whenever it is threatened. We will be committed to the historical moral obligation that we have as Austrians towards the security of Israel within our capacity as a neutral country. It’s our moral obligation, that this is part of our ‘Staatsrason’, meaning in the national interest of my home country. This means: the security of Israel and the Jewish people is not negotiable to us. ” Kurz began.
“We understand the serious security threats Israel is facing. We therefore fully condemn all acts of violence, inside Israel, at its borders and beyond. The security situation of Israel is not comparable to any other country because we all know: when it comes to war, other countries may lose one or more battles, but can still survive. With Israel, it’s different. Israel is a strong but small country. It cannot afford to lose even one single battle, as this would determine its end.” he continued
“I truly hope that the future for the Middle East will not bring further wars but that the region can grow together in peace. That not only a two-state-solution is possible through bilateral negotiations of the two parties but also the region at large will be able to settle its existing conflicts,” he added. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/israels-security-is-not-negotiable-to-us-austrian-pm-kurz/ >video in link

>Infighting between Turkish-backed militants in Syria’s Afrin kills several DAMASCUS, SYRIA (2:35 P.M.) – After a short-lived truce, fierce clashes renewed between two Turkish-backed rebel groups in the Syrian city of Afrin which required the Turkish military’s intervention to resolve the dispute.
Militants from Sultan Muhammad al-Fateh and its rival Ahrar al-Sharqiyah group engaged in a firefight which killed and injured dozens from both warring parties.
The prolonged clashes, which lasted from Monday evening till Tuesday morning, were only interrupted when the Turkish military intervened; forcing both factions to return to their bases outside the city.
The reasons behind the infighting are still unknown.
Both factions have had their disputes in the past months; most probably over who has more power over the other.
Earlier, Ahra al-Sharqiyah declared they expelled two minor groups fighting under its banner; namely Al-Hamza and Al-Muntasir, for failure to adhere with their orders. >Iran supports Turkey’s military operation in northern Iraq Iran has voiced support for a potential Turkish operation against Kurdish militants just over its border in northern Iraq, Turkish Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli said on Tuesday.
The Turkish military has ramped up air strikes in northern Iraq targeting Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in Qandil, close to the Iraq-Iran border, where high-ranking members of the militant group are thought to be located.
The government has also said Turkish troops have deployed roughly 30 km (nearly 20 miles) inside northern Iraq, not far from Qandil.
“Our offer to Iran was to carry out the operation together. Iran, in its remarks at least, has voiced very important support,” Canikli told a roundtable interview with the state-run Anadolu news agency.
There was no immediate confirmation of his assertion from Tehran.
Canikli said Turkey was also in full agreement with Baghdad on a potential operation into Qandil, adding that Ankara was in talks with “all possible countries” on the matter.
Iraq, however, said it would not accept any Turkish operation against Qandil or other PKK strongholds.
“The Iraqi government will not accept any advance on its land by Turkish forces in pursuit of the PKK elements currently present in the Sinjar, Makhmour and Qandil mountains,” Saad al-Hadithi, a spokesman for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi told the Iraqi News Agency.
He added that the Iraqi government would “absolutely not allow” any aggression from inside its land against Turkey or other states.
Canikli however said there were “serious attacks and infiltration” into Turkey from Qandil, and that Turkey would remain in northern Iraq until all terrorists groups were removed.
“Our goal now is to be a lasting presence there until terror is completely removed, we will remain in northern Iraq,” he said.
With a large Kurdish population of its own, concentrated in the southeast, Ankara has long resisted Kurdish ambitions for independence in Iraq, Syria or Iran, fearing it could inflame separatism inside Turkey.
An offensive against the PKK in Qandil would mark Turkey’s third cross-border operation since 2016, with the first two targeting Kurdish militia fighters in northern Syria.
Last week, Turkey and the United States also endorsed a roadmap for the withdrawal of the Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara considers a terrorist organisation linked to the PKK, from the northern Syrian city of Manbij.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis told Pentagon reporters that Turkish and U.S. officials would meet in Germany this week to discuss the details of the roadmap, namely joint patrols inside Manbij to secure the region.
>Another attack on Shiite towns in northeast Idlib foiled DAMASCUS, SYRIA (5:30 P.M.) – The Syrian forces defending two government-held towns in northeast Idlib have managed to thwart yet another attack launched by jihadi groups as the towns receive new supplies from the air.
The assault, the second this week, was launched last night from Sawaghuyah axis to the east of Fouaa town and lasted for nearly 10 hours before it was entirely and successfully repelled.
No casualties were reported this time among the defenders who were capable of recapturing two posts they had lost during the battles.
Meanwhile, cargo planes airdropped more supplies into the besieged towns to help local fighters as well as civilians withstand the stifling blockade.

>France steps up efforts to counter Beijing’s activities in South China Sea – reports French assault ship Dixmude and a frigate sailed near the disputed Spratly Islands and other nearby islets as a part of a FONOP in the South China Sea, AFP reported. A researcher from the Hudson Institute think-tank, who was on board during the operation, said that several Chinese warships “tailed” Dixmude until it left the area.
“Our patrol involved passing close to these islets to obtain intelligence with all the sensors it is possible to use in international waters,” the Dixmude’s commanding officer, Jean Porcher said in a video interview.
Although it is the US that conducts most of the FONOPs in the South China Sea, France and the UK also actively participate in them. AFP has reported that Paris is planning on sending more ships to the Indo-Pacific region to conduct military exercises in a bid to counter what Western countries have called Beijing’s efforts to “militarize the South China Sea.”
Several countries claim sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea. Most recent reports show that China has been actively deploying military equipment, missile systems, jets on the Spratly and Paracel islands. Beijing claims that the deployed forces play a purely defensive role.

According to pro-government activists, the UAE-backed Southern Resistance and Republican Guard were responsible for this advance near the Hodeideh Airport.
In addition to the ground advance by the Gulf-backed troops, the Arab Coalition, led by Saudi Arabia, has launched over 20 airstrikes over the Hodeideh Governorate.

>OPCW claims sarin, chlorine “very likely” used in Syria in March 2017 The Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed on Wednesday that chemical weapons were “very likely used” in Syria’s Ltamenah on March 24 and 25 2017, the OPCW said.
“The Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), confirmed in a report released today that sarin was very likely used as a chemical weapon in the south of Ltamenah, Syrian Arab Republic, on 24 March 2017. The FFM also concluded that chlorine was very likely used as a chemical weapon at Ltamenah Hospital and the surrounding area on 25 March 2017,” the statement read.
However, the international body explained that drawing final conclusions on the issue would require a longer period of time, due to “the collection of information and material, interviewing witnesses, as well as analysis of samples.”
The report released by OPCW lays out that the assumptions they made are based on “separate witness testimony, epidemiological analysis and environmental samples,” without providing any further details. The investigative body has further explained that its mandate is “to determine whether chemical weapons or toxic chemicals as weapons have been used in Syria,” without identifying those responsible for the attacks.
The alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria has become a hot topic on the international agenda over the last several years after numerous accusations by the Syrian opposition, as well as Western countries, against Syrian government forces. The latter has been blamed for alleged chemical attacks in different parts of the country without any solid evidence. This has repeatedly been underlined by Moscow, which has stressed that drawing any conclusions without the presence of inspectors at the site is wrong.
>Iraqi forces strike ISIS gathering inside Syria BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:40 P.M.) – For the first time this week, the Iraqi Armed Forces have struck the Islamic State’s (ISIS) positions inside eastern Syria.
According to the official statement from the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), their troops struck an Islamic State gathering inside Syria’s Al-Hasakah Governorate.
The ISIS terrorists were reportedly gathering near the Nineveh-Hasakah border this morning, when the Iraqi Armed Forces bombarded the terrorists with artillery shells.

According to a report from the Associated Press, a German court in Dusseldorf sentenced Saleh A. to seven years in prison after finding him guilty of being an Islamic State member and carrying out killings in Syria.
The AP report stated Saleh A. is a Syrian national in his 30s, but did not post where he was from inside Syria or when he fought.
The alleged ISIS member admitted to killing a Syrian government sniper and plotting to carry out an attack in Dusseldorf.
>Iranian President mulls withdrawing forces from Syria Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has discussed the situation in Syria, as well as prospects of the Iran deal with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in a telephone call, the official website of the Iranian president reported.
Hassan Rouhani noted that Tehran had sent its military advisers to the Arab republic at the request request of its legitimate government in order to help Damascus fight terrorism. He expressed hope that no “foreign military presence” would be needed after the terrorist threat had been eradicated.
Israel accuses Iran of sending the country’s troops to Syria in order to attack it from Syrian territory. Tel Aviv has already conducted several airstrikes against Syrian bases under a pretext of Iranian Revolutionary Guards being stationed there. Tehran and Damascus deny these accusations.
State of Iran Nuclear Deal
The two presidents also discussed the current state of the JCPOA. Rouhani praised the stance to keep the deal alive that Europe took after the US withdrawal, but noted that so far statements had not “accompanied by practical and tangible measures and solutions.”
“If Iran cannot benefit from the privileges of this agreement, remaining in it will not be possible,” the Iranian president said.
Emmanuel Macron confirmed commitment to the JCPOA and assured Rouhani that France is working on “a series of measures and practical solutions” to make the deal work.
>Zero hour approaches long-awaited battle for southern Syria BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:30 P.M.) – The battle for southern Syria is quickly approaching, as the deadline for the rebel response to the government’s reconciliation expires in the next 24 hours.
According to a military source in Damascus, the rebel forces in the Dara’a and Al-Quneitra governorates were given until June 14th to provide the government with a response to their reconciliation request.
However, the rebel forces in both Dara’a and Al-Quneitra have already expressed their unwillingness to reconcile with the government, as this would surely mean that many of their fighters would be forced to leave these provinces.
Despite the response from the rebels, the Syrian government is likely to extend the deadline for their response, if there is a legitimate attempt among the armed groups to reconcile.
Previously, a rebel group in the Al-Quneitra Governorate expressed interest in reconciliation with the government, but they were later attacked by their former allies.
Final Preparations Made
For the Syrian Arab Army, they are fully prepared to launch their assault in Al-Quneitra.
An officer from the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division told Al-Masdar earlier this week that their forces and missile launchers are all in position to launch their assault in Al-Quneitra.
This operation in the Al-Quneitra Governorate will be led by the 4th Division’s elite 42nd Brigade (Ghiath Forces), who have already led several prior offensives in the East Ghouta, Beit Jinn, Al-Zabadani, Darayya, and Khan Al-Sheih.
The 42nd Brigade arrived in Al-Quneitra with their newly developed “Golan-1000” missile launchers, which played an imperative role in the battles for the East Ghouta and southern Damascus. Dara’a Battle
While the Al-Quneitra operation is all set to launch, the Syrian Army’s Dara’a offensive is expected to be launched a few weeks later.
The reason for the delay in the Dara’a operation is due to the fact that not all of the Syrian Army’s reinforcements have arrived yet.
>Full report from strategic battle in west Yemen BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:45 P.M.) – The Gulf-backed troops launched the largest offensive of the three year long Yemen War, today, targeting the strategic Hodeideh Port that is under the control of the Houthi forces.
Led by the Southern Resistance Army and Republican Guard, the Gulf-backed troops stormed the Houthi defenses around the Hodeideh Governorate, seizing several points from the anti-government forces.
Among the most imperative advances made by the Gulf-backed troops in Hodeideh today took place near the provincial airport, which is now within striking distance for the Republican Guard and Southern Resistance Army.
According to pro-government media activists, their forces are closing in on the Hodeideh Aiport after making a second major push towards this strategic installation in western Yemen.
The Houthi forces have responded to these advances made by the pro-government troops by launching several missiles towards the camps of the Southern Resistance Army and Yemeni Republican Guard.
Yemeni Republican Guard
Once a strategic ally to the Houthi forces, the Yemeni Republican Guard switched sides in this war, following the assassination of former President ‘Ali ‘Abdullah Saleh.
Now led by his Saleh’s son, Hadi, the Yemeni Republican Guard has wrecked havoc on the Houthi defenses in western Yemen for much of this year.
The Yemeni Republican Guard played a pivotal role in expelling the Houthi forces from the Mocha Port and several other major sites in western Yemen.
Arab Coalition
Perhaps no force has played a bigger role in the success of the pro-government troops than the Arab Coalition, which is led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirats (UAE).
The Arab Coalition provided much needed air cover in eastern Hodeideh, where the Southern Resistance Army and Republican Guard are attempting to capture the Al-Hays District.
According to pro-Houthi activists, the Arab Coalition launched over 40 airstrikes above the Hodeideh Governorate, today, causing severe damage to the province, while also killing a number of civilians.

>Large ISIS counter-offensive in southeast Syria falls apart BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:10 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a large-scale counter-offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the Badiya Al-Sham region of Al-Sweida on Wednesday.
ISIS began the attack on Wednesday by attempting to overwhelm the Syrian Arab Army troops near the large hilltop of Tal Barakat.
For a few hours, the Islamic State repeatedly struck the Syrian Army’s defenses at Tal Barakat in a bid to overwhelm the pro-government troops.
However, the Islamic State’s assault would eventually lose momentum by sundown, forcing them to withdraw back into this vast desert region in southeast Syria.
According to a military report, the Syrian Army, alongside their allies from Hezbollah and the National Defense Forces (NDF), was able to reestablish full security around Tal Barakat.
The report added that scores of Islamic State terrorists were killed during this brief battle on Wednesday.
Since launching their southeast Syria offensive, the Syrian Army and their allies have liberated a large chunk of territory in the Badiya Al-Sham region, putting them within striking distance of the Islamic State’s stronghold, Al-Kara’a.
If the Syrian Army can take control of Al-Kara’a, the remaining Islamic State terrorists will likely be forced to take refuge in the large number of caves in the region. https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/large-isis-counter-offensive-in-southeast-syria-falls-apart/ >No Italian troops inside of Syria – report BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:30 P.M.) – There are no Italian troops in Syria, a spokesperson from the Italian Defense Ministry told The Defense Post on Wednesday.
“The report about Italian troops in Syria is absolutely not true,” Lieutenant Colonel Massimo Carta, Head of Media Operations for the Italian Ministry of Defense, told The Defense Post.
“There aren’t any Italian troops employed in Syria,” Carta reiterated, adding that the deployment of Italian Armed Forces in foreign countries must be approved by the Italian parliament.
Rumors of Italian troops in Syria began when Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency claimed that Italy had sent troops from Iraq to Syria.
The Anadolu report added that the Italian troops had deployed to a U.S. military base near the strategic Al-‘Umar Oil Fields.
