So North and South Korea may be ending hostilities. We may see a united Korea in our lifetime boys.

They'll just make some bullshit statement that acknowledges the status quo but doesn't really result in any worth of unification.

I doubt they will unify, but an end to the Korean war would be nice.

Why do they need unification? That isn't the point here. The point is in stopping North Korea's perpetually hostile stance towards its neighbors. And if that is accomplished without massive bloodshed, that will be a significant victory

The Norks need to be hostile to their neighbors to remain in power. With out the big bad USA ready to attack, it would be harder to control the public.

The war has been unneccesarily prolonged by bad US policy. Still, intent to hold negotiations doesn't mean anything.

Also, unification will not happen on the same timeline as peace talks. North Korea is perfectly willing to make a deal, but they'll be playing for assurance of Best Korea's sovereignty. Trump will be playing for the safety of US territories.

The only way to pay for unification is either by the threat or the act of total destruction. Trump has the resources for this, but it might cost him domestic victories, which are more important to him than some backwater peninsula.

Also, in my opinion, mlpol is too slow to handle a thread like this. If all I have is two lines and a link to an article, I wouldn't make a new thread. Chances are there's already a thread up with NK as general topic in which this can be posted anyway.

I also like to assume than visitors of mlpol follow the news.

/mlpol/ is slow so it needs new threads. Whether they are good or bad people need reason to be here.

It's nice to see peace coming along nicely somewhere in the world, unlike the fuckup we're seeing over in Semite Land.

Good, I wonder what the Norks will think if they got to travel freely to the South. But I assume there will be a time of acclimation where food and other goods gradually gets into North Korea making the life in Best Korea better before opening borders for "free travel".

Will the two finally be at peace, maybe but I sure as hell know that they WILL NOT unite. North Korea will still have closed borders even if there is peace. Can't let the slaves, I mean the citizens of the glorious communist utopia of North Korea see all the things capitalist South Korea has such as food.

A long, long way to go and it has yet to even start. The Japanese government and most imporatantly Abe are shit scared of any peaceful agreement. It is not in the interest of the Japanese government to allow North Korea to became part of the wider community. Abe will do everything he can to stop the peace protest.

The most vocal element that prevents any type of settlement is a group of well funded, well supported in the media of relatives of kidnapped Japanese (alledgedly). These kidnapping accured so long ago it is very unlikely that the people are still alive espcecially if you consider the average age of mortality in North Korea. Plus it is a handful of people (less than 30). However 30 pensioners who have not been seen for decades have more rights than every other individual on the planet. The peace process hinges on how much Trump decides to take this tiny group of people seriously.
This group intention has always been to keep the war going, to prevent peace at all costs. Their spokepeople may have genuine concerns but behind the scenes is the Japanese government and its absolute want not to allow Trump to succeed. If the abductions become and issue then all is lost and we will continue with this shit until every fucking relative dies and that could be another 20 years.
