That's because they overplayed their hand. I honestly didn't give a shit about gay people one way or the other and basically supported gay marriage by default until about mid 2014 or so. Once they started making up genders and suing people for baking cakes I started reversing a lot of my positions on them, and it's not hard to imagine that a lot of other people feel the same in current year + 3. Most people are probably willing to be tolerant to a point, but once you start seriously disrupting the social order they're accustomed to it tends to encourage reactionary movements.
