CIVIL WAR – 12.5 million

12.5 million in population losses. (Erlikhman V. V. *Population Losses in the 20th Century: A Reference Book* — Moscow: Russkaya Panorama Publishing House, 2004)

Of these, 2.5 million were combatants killed,

2 million killed as a result of terror. The ratio of Red Terror victims to White Terror victims was 4:1,

2 million emigrated,

6 million died from famine and epidemics.

These figures may be disputed, but any such challenges should be addressed to Mr. Erlikhman.

FAMINE – 13.5 million

1921–22. The Soviet Central Statistical Administration determined the population deficit for the period from 1920 to 1922 to be 5.1 million people.

1932–1933. A State Duma statement titled "In Memory of the Victims of the Famine of the 1930s in the USSR" cites a death toll of 7 million. Demographers' estimates range from 2.5 to 8 million.

1946–47. Excess mortality in 1946 amounted to 800,000 people. Demographers estimate famine victims at between 1 and 1.5 million.

DEKULAKIZATION – 0.7 million

4 million deported. 600,000 died in places of exile (a conservative estimate by V. N. Zemskov). 90,000 died in transit.

TERROR – 2.5 million people (minimum estimate)

1930–1953: arrests on political charges – 3.8 million people; executions by shooting – 786,000 people.

1930–1953: deaths in places of detention – 1.7 million people. A.G. Vishnevsky’s highest estimate for losses due to repression reaches 6 million people.

The total number of individuals who passed through prisons, labor camps, and special settlements is estimated at 25 million—effectively one in four citizens of working age.

In sum, direct population losses resulting from external circumstances during the Bolshevik era amount to 33 million people based on major categories alone (and there are other, secondary categories—such as the 11,000 lives lost during the Tambov Rebellion—which could add up to several million more).

33 million people. This figure already represents half of Kurganov’s estimate for total demographic losses; when extrapolated to include the "unborn" and the premature deaths of former camp inmates, the resulting total would likely exceed Kurganov’s figure of 66 million.
