I personally have no intention of clipping any birds' wings, but I do know some people do that, and the bird I like to own, if I ever get a big enough place, is a pigeon, which lives about five times longer in captivity than in the wild of cities. Until then, I'm gonna feed them in the city, that's the plan.
But I do get your concern that birds need to fly (and I think you have a point), but there are ways to do that with harnesses and leashes and such (or simple free flying). Though it can be dangerous depending on the type of bird you own, since there are hawks and such out there.
